Good morning. You can see a

preview of today's show here . Today, David Brown reflects on the anniversary of the racist mass shooting in El Paso that shook Texas and the nation.

No matter where you are, you likely remember where you were three years ago today

when you heard the news .

In
[link removed]
today's opinion section of The El Paso Times, state Rep. Joe Moody of El Paso writes: "This week brings a somber anniversary: the third year since 23 innocent people were taken from us in a racially motivated massacre. Remembering the bright, beautiful people we lost that day is the clearest reason we keep this date in our hearts … it's a wound that remains fresh for all of us here in El Paso."

On August 3, 2019, a gunman from North Texas, who had written and posted online a racist screed about what he called an immigrant "invasion," traveled hundreds of miles to El Paso and opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle on people in a Walmart. As El Pasoans mark the third anniversary of the shooting with vigils and memorials, the alleged gunman still sits in a jail cell awaiting his fate. While he faces dozens of murder charges (among others) at the state and federal levels, he

has yet to stand trial . You can hear our conversation about the latest with The Texas Newsroom's Julian Aguilar on today's show.

Rep. Moody, as you may recall, helped lead the House investigation into another mass shooting – the one in Uvalde in May where, as Moody put it, "21 more names were added to the 23 already burned in my mind."

As Texas students prepare to head back to school in the wake of the

Expert: With issues and poll numbers keeping midterms tight, Democrats should make Dan Patrick ‘public enemy number one’

Succeeding in November will require Texas Dems to rally behind gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke – but also focus on tightening races with Dan Patrick and Ken Paxton.

Texas schools struggling to spend billions in federal pandemic aid

The Texas Education Agency says it’s the largest influx of money Texas schools have seen. But less than a third of $18 billion in aid has been used, with two years left to spend it.

Blanco County
Founded: 1858

County seat: Johnson City

Population: 11,374

Editor’s note: Currently the
[link removed]
Smoke Rider Fire is straddling Blanco and Hays counties, one of several wildfires in parched Central Texas. It
[link removed]
is only partially contained , so be careful!

Growing pains: Known for its charming small town vibes and attractions along its namesake river, neither the county or city of Blanco are immune to the growth driving nearby cities. When we caught up with Blanco’s mayor
[link removed]
back in 2015 , the region’s rapid growth was on his mind. “The biggest challenges [we have] are Austin coming in from the east, and San Antonio coming up from the south,” he said, “and how to deal with that.” Speaking of politics, that growth is
[link removed]
setting up some interesting dynamics when it comes to elections in the region.

No drawing a blank: There’s plenty to do in Blanco County. The Science Mill
[link removed]
breathed new life into long-standing grain mills in Johnson City, while a burgeoning Hill Country craft brewing scene has
[link removed]
also bubbled up in the region. And come wintertime, the Johnson City courthouse is famously
[link removed]
strewn with lights .

One last thing: Sounds pretty? Hollywood agrees, with Johnson City serving as an
[link removed]
idyllic backdrop and inspiration .
