Friends -
At a time when we desperately need progressive leadership in Congress, I am writing to ask you to split a $5 contribution between Rep. Ilhan Omar, Rep. Cori Bush, and Becca Balint — three progressive women running for Congress.
In the midst of massive income and wealth inequality, a global pandemic, and the existential threat of climate change — it has never been more important to elect candidates who will fight for a strong, progressive agenda.
We need to elect more candidates who will take on corporate greed, authoritarianism, and bigotry and who are prepared to fight for justice. And in order to do that, we must bring our people together in a multi-generational, multi-racial movement to take on the big-money interests that have so much political and economic power in our country.
Ilhan Omar, Cori Bush, and Becca Balint are building that kind of movement through their campaigns in Minnesota, Missouri, and Vermont. They understand that people have had enough of our corrupt political and economic systems that favor the ultra-wealthy and large corporations while working people struggle to put food on the table.
Right now Ilhan, Cori, and Becca are relying on lots of people contributing small donations in order to have the financial resources to run a successful campaign between now and November. It is very important that we have their leadership in Congress in order to continue our struggle to transform this country.
So I am asking you today:
We, as progressives, are engaged in many struggles right now. We are trying to save the planet from the ravages of climate change. We're trying to create an economy that works for all and not just the billionaire class. We're trying to defend our democracy against those who are moving us toward authoritarianism. And that's just to name a few.
But, in the midst of all these struggles, we cannot simply remain on the defensive. We need to continue building our movement to transform this country.
We must contrast our vision for the future of this country against those who wish to maintain the status quo and our corrupt political and economic systems.
We must stand with candidates who will take on powerful special interests — people like Ilhan, Cori, and Becca, who we can trust to fight for the working class of this country.
Ilhan Omar is one of the champions of our movement in Congress. She and I have worked together on a number of important issues in Congress, including canceling student debt, providing school meals year-round to students, and protecting workers' rights. She is a leader of incredible courage, and we need Ilhan's continued strength and leadership in Congress. That's why we must stand with her in her re-election campaign in Minnesota's 5th congressional district.
Cori Bush understands that as progressives, our job is to stand up and fight for working families, and she has been a fearless advocate for economic, racial, social, and environmental justice in all forms. She knows the struggles facing the people of Missouri because she has lived those same struggles herself. Cori is facing re-election in Missouri's 1st congressional district, and with your support she will continue to be a tremendous voice for our movement in Congress.
Becca Balint is a teacher, former union member, and President of the Vermont State Senate who has passed huge investments in affordable housing, protected reproductive rights, and has always strongly advocated for unions and working people. She understands the urgent need for our progressive movement to stand together and combat the existential threat of climate change, establish a Medicare for All, single-payer health care system, and create good-paying jobs across Vermont and the entire country. I hope you will join me in supporting her campaign for Congress in Vermont.
Ilhan, Cori, and Becca are all running for Congress to create a government that works for ALL of our people, not just those at the top. It would make a big difference for their campaigns if you could chip in today, which is why I am asking one more time:
Thank you for contributing to support these great candidates to help elect the most progressive Congress this country has ever seen.
In solidarity,
Bernie Sanders
