Register for Jury Nullification 101

As a supporter of the Fully Informed Jury Association, you probably already have an idea of what jury nullification is. But that's not enough! How do you use it in the real world? That can be a bit tricky, so you need to be prepared.

This webinar is designed specifically to cover the nuts and bolts of jury nullification in practice. We'll start with a short overview of the basics of jury nullification to get everyone, including newbies, on the same page. Then we'll spend most of the webinar with a stellar panel of 3 criminal trial attorneys experienced in jury trials discussing the major hurdles that impede fully informed jurors from exercising their right of jury nullification such as:
• not knowing how to get on a jury once you know about jury nullification,
• concerns about whether or not you can be prosecuted for exercising jury nullification,
• filling out juror questionnaires and answering questions during in-person jury selection,
• dealing with various oaths you may be told to swear or affirm,
• whether or not to discuss jury nullification during deliberations,
• and more!
Our panel of experts will include jury nullification-friendly criminal defense attorneys Thomas Gallagher, Catherine Bernard, and Clay Conrad, who literally wrote the book (Jury Nullification: The Evolution of a Doctrine) on jury nullification! These folks all work on criminal jury trials and can answer these questions based on their real life courtroom experience.
This webinar is suitable both for folks just learning about jury nullification and people such as yourself who are already familiar with it. The goal is to get everyone prepped and ready to go when that jury summons shows up in the mail. So I'm asking you to do two things:
1, Register for the Zoom webinar or join us at the appointed time on the official FIJA Facebook page where the webinar will also be livestreamed.
2. Create a fully informed jury by inviting 12 other folks to join us for this webinar!

Register for 15 Minutes with FIJA

These short, weekly sessions feature a quick 15-minute presentation:
• to update you on recent jury-related news such as the status of trial by jury during the pandemic, court cases related to jury rights, legislation regarding trial by jury, etc., and
• highlight one or two FIJA projects, resources, events, etc.

We'll start on time, pack that 15 minutes with information, and then you can be on your way. Optionally, you can stick around afterward for a quick Q&A session of no more than another 15 minutes (though usually it runs maybe 5 to 7 minutes).

Register just once for access to all the sessions through the end of the year. You'll receive reminder notices each Monday. Attend as many or as few of these sessions as you like, and you can unregister at any time if you would like to stop receiving notices.

Monday, 5 September 2022
(but because it coincides with Labor Day this year, we invite

you to celebrate it any day from a week before to a week after)

Find Jury Rights Day Resources

FIJA has celebrated Jury Rights Day on September 5 each year for more than 30 years to commemorate the famous case of William Penn in 1670 which laid the foundation for the right that jurors have still today to conscientiously acquit someone by jury nullification.
For the very first Jury Rights Day, FIJA invited juror educators nationwide to spend an hour outside their local courthouse handing out FIJA's educational materials to create more fully informed jurors. You can definitely do that this year, though you might want to pick an alternate date close to Jury Rights Day proper when the courthouse is actually open. Once again we will be sending out free Jury Rights Day kits to those doing courthouse outreach. Details are at the Jury Rights Day link below.
If you are not up for courthouse outreach, we also have a variety of other suggested activities on our Jury Rights Day page linked below to educate your community while commemoratng this historic date. In the coming weeks I'll be highlighting some of these in individual emails to you.
How will YOU celebrate Jury Rights Day? LET US KNOW! We would love to help you with materials, publicizing your event, or in any other way we can.

We are looking forward to you joining us for these events! Please feel free to drop me an email if you have any questions about any of them.
