With one stroke of his pen — without needing Congress to pass any new legislation — President Biden can deliver badly needed relief to tens of millions of Americans.

And he must.

I’m talking about canceling student debt.

It would lift an anchor off our economy. It would make it possible for people to finally buy homes or buy cars or start small businesses or start families. It would start to close the racial wealth gap among borrowers. And it would say that our government is on the side of helping families make ends meet.

With the current pause on student loan payments set to expire at the end of the month, the Biden administration is deciding its next steps right now.

Canceling student debt would be a huge boost to working- and middle-class Americans. Nearly 60% of borrowers don’t have a four-year degree — people who took out loans to go to community college or get a certificate, or couldn’t finish and didn’t get a diploma. Most loans are held by people with no household wealth at all. And this isn’t just about one generation — around 20% of federal borrowers are 50 or older.

Now, let’s back up and talk about how we got here.

For decades now, our government has been subjecting students to a failed experiment: slashing public funding for higher education, telling students that don’t come from well-off families that they’ll need to take out loans to make up the difference, and hoping for the best.

It hasn’t worked. Student debt has held back tens of millions of people and held back our whole economy. And even though it’s never been more important to continue education after high school, it’s never been further out of reach.

I was able to get my college degree from a great public university that only cost $50 a semester, but we know that’s just not possible today. We need to make it possible for everyone to get the education they need — and we need to stop crushing people for fighting for their future.
