President Biden is expected to make a decision on extending the freeze on student loan repayment any day now — there are even reports that he is considering mass student debt forgiveness, but hasn’t made his decision yet.
We need to reach out and send a loud message to the White House that only forgiving some debt is not enough. Can you sign our urgent petition calling on President Biden to cancel all student debt?
Summer took out her first loan at 17 when she went to Penn State as a first-generation college student and the child of a working class mom. For so many working families, college is sold as the best opportunity to escape the cycles of inequality and generational poverty.
But we know that all too often student debt winds up exacerbating inequality instead of healing it, disproportionately affecting communities of color, Black Americans, and working-class communities who already face economic disparities. And requiring folks to resume loan payment during an ongoing global pandemic is unequivocally wrong.
