In United States v. Windsor, the Court nullified the Defense of Marriage Act's provision that banned the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages. Windsor opened married LBGTQ couples' access to federal benefits, such as the benefits spouses have under Social Security. Then, in 2015, the Court made history in Obergefell v. Hodges, a case that determined the constitution protects same-sex marriage federally as a fundamental right.

Now, those rights are in danger. This year, SCOTUS will hear 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis, a case involving a business owner who insists that free speech allows her to discriminate against a same-sex couple. As The Hill explained, an adverse decision "would be a steppingstone toward the ultimate demise of Obergefell."

The House has already passed the Respect for Marriage Act, which would enshrine marriage equality for all races and genders. Now it's up to the Senate to pass the bill.

The U.S. House has passed the Respect for Marriage Act – legislation that would enshrine marriage equality in federal law and require nationwide recognition of all valid marriages without discrimination based on sexuality, race, ethnicity, or national origin.

The opportunity to fully enshrine our right to marriage now lies in the U.S. Senate.

It’s no secret that our basic human rights are under attack – the stolen Supreme Court and GOP-controlled states have proven their eagerness to strip us of our established rights every chance they get. That is why we must act NOW to protect our rights officially and nationwide.
