- How powerful are California's public-sector labor unions?
For organized labor, few states have been more fertile for growth than California. A strong, long-standing Progressive tradition and governments historically favorable to unionization across economic sectors have made the state golden for a labor movement. CRC's Michael Watson investigates why California has the seventh-highest rate of union membership among the states here.
- Who's funding the Left's Court-packing agenda?
House Democrats unveiled their latest effort to pack the Supreme Court at an event hosted by "dark money." Central to this effort is Take Back the Court and its sister action fund. Where the funding came from is not quite clear, but Jennifer Pritzker of the Chicago billionaire Pritzkers is a likely source. CRC's Hayden Ludwig exposes the scheme here.
- Who would you nominate for a political Razzie Award?
Recently, numerous left-wing U.S. representatives--including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN)--blocked traffic near the U.S. Capitol as part of a "stunning and brave" pro-abortion protest. The street theater might almost have been believable if Reps. Ocasio-Cortez and Omar had remembered not to break faux-handcuffed poses to wave and make Black Panther–style fist salutes. CRC's Michael Watson critiques their acting here.
- Which laws are left-wing DAs refusing to enforce?
After the Supreme Court released its decision in Dobbs, "dark money" group Fair and Just Prosecution released a statement signed by prosecutors around the country who said they would refuse to enforce any state laws that ban or criminalize. Left-wing DAs are trying to excuse their inaction as prosecutorial discretion, but it looks more like a grab for legislative (and judicial) power. CRC intern Jonathan McGee warns of the dangers here.
- Was the National Lawyers Guild always radical left?
Since its founding in 1936 or 1937, the Guild has consistently been identified with radical-left groups and political orientations. During the 1960s and 1970s, some of its members were affiliated with extremist groups like the Weather Underground. Today, the National Lawyers Guild is best known for the legal support and training that it provides to left-wing demonstrators, including the Black Lives Matter movement and Antifa. Pierre Omidyar is the founder of the multinational e-commerce corporation eBay, a philanthropist, and a financier of left-wing organizations, including investigative journalism projects. Omidyar is a funder of left-wing politics, including the NeverTrump PAC, a group opposed to 2016 Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. Omidyar is a also donor to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
Omidyar has also founded a network of nonprofits, including the Democracy Fund, the Democracy Fund Voice, and Omidyar Network Fund, which are politically active. Through them, he has given $213 million to various causes and organizations, including the Open Society Foundations, the Tides Foundation, the Center for Public Integrity, and the Center for Responsive Politics.
