First, the danger we face is bigger than just Trump, as disgustingly bigoted, misogynist, and dishonest as he is. The danger we face is posed by the whole Trump/Pence regime – the many diverse strains of fascism in this country that have grown up over decades and which now are firmly installed in all branches of government. This includes the Christian fascists now packed into key agencies and courts, as well as the vice presidency of Pence. Second, the full scope of crimes carried out by this regime go far, far, far beyond Abuse of Power and Obstruction of Congress. As we said over a year ago, “Trump’s 'Make America Great Again' is a 21st century fascist program of Manifest Destiny – 'America First' – wrapped in the flag and Mike Pence’s Bible taken literally, with a program of white supremacy, misogyny, and xenophobia.” By not including this full fascist program in their impeachment articles, the Democrats are not merely ignoring these crimes, they are legitimating them. Third, on the very same day that the Democrats unveiled these articles, they also made a big show of collaborating with Trump on his new version of NAFTA. This was a big signal to the world that, to them, Trump can be worked with. No! There can be no “common ground” with fascists. The Trump/Pence regime must be uncompromisingly opposed and driven from office. And they must be driven out on the basis of repudiating their whole fascist program – from the kids in cages to the Muslim Ban to their shredding of environmental protections to their attacks on science to their threats against the people of the world and so much more. This does not mean that impeachment is unimportant. What it means is that we must not sit back as passive spectators. Instead, we must seize on this crisis at the top of society now erupting in impeachment to force our demand onto society that the whole Trump/Pence regime must go! How do we do this? By taking to the streets!
We must take history into our own hands, turning dread for the future into a force for hope. These protests on Saturday will build on the momentum of the first five weeks of the #OUTNOW protests, but we also must grow in numbers, breadth and determination. Bring everyone you know. And all this will not be the end, either. This will put us in a stronger position to go forward with even bigger protests and disruptions to the rising fascism in the weeks to come with the aim of bringing forward hundreds of thousands and ultimately millions to protest again and again until the regime has been driven from power.
