(Ret) Ty Thomas standing in front of the Tommy the Trojan statue at the University of Southern California (USC), August 1, 2022. Dear Members and Friends, We, MDAA are excited to announce the USC SHIELD Executive Program ’23 in our partnership with USC’s Sol Price School of Public Policy and the Viterbi School of Engineering! This dynamic, innovative, team, featuring national experts will educate senior leaders from the military, government, and industry at the intersection of public policy and engineering in the development of effective missile and space defense strategy and policy. It will explore the widening gap between theory and the practical application of National Security constructs in missile defense and space policy. Then it will synchronize stakeholders to find initial solutions and form lasting relationships that will revisit and continue to look for solutions to make the world a safer place. Building off the success of last year’s inaugural cohort we have selected a brand, the shield, for its symbolism, the epic and forever military defense tool, to align both with our present-day focus in defense and deterrence, as well as with our USC Trojan warrior ethos. Space - The domain that demands new engineering and policy innovations, physical and cyber, and their integration with Land, Sea, and Air. History - Past, present, and future, the lens through which we evaluate and formulate new Policies. Industry - The engine that translates academic work into reality. Engineering - The research, technology, and planning that organizes our vision Leadership - The prime mover across all disciplines. Deterrence - Our goal in all our endeavors. This year’s will feature a wide range of both new and returning guest speakers from across the curriculum’s subject areas in policy, space, technology, and missile defense. It will also include group capstone projects to be worked on throughout the course, with presentations during the final session. Site visits are in planning for Vandenberg Space Force Base, Space Systems Command at Los Angeles Space Force Base, and a weekend session in Washington, DC. This is groundbreaking work, with high stakes and bold outcomes! Join us, consider participating, or passing this news on, in the USC SHIELD ’23 Executive Program- We are dreaming big together to live the dream of freedom and the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness.
