Republican Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert sent a letter Monday to President Joe Biden calling on him to end the vaccine mandate for foreign travelers into the U.S.
The letter, first obtained by the Daily Caller, mentions the professional tennis player Novak Djokovic, who is from Serbia, and how he might not be able to play in the 2022 U.S. Open due to the Biden administration’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate on foreign travelers. The lawmakers argue that the vaccine mandate is anti-science, anti-American and that it is unnecessary.
In February, Djokovic said he would rather never win another tennis trophy or play in another tournament than get the COVID-19 vaccine.
“Novak Djokovic overcame war and threats of starvation to become one of the world’s top tennis players, if not the top player. Yet, now it appears he may not be able to overcome the Biden Administration’s cold, heartless, malevolent, scientifically oblivious mentality in order to compete in the 2022 U.S. Open,” Gohmert told the Daily Caller before sending the letter.
“The current vaccine mandate for foreign travelers to the United States is not only anti-science, it’s anti-American. At this point in time, it is ludicrous that anyone, anywhere, would currently be mandated to take this Emergency Use Authorized COVID vaccine from which the odds of personal harm increase as the manufacturer’s liability for harm or death are prevented. It is the very vaccine Dr. Deborah Birx so eloquently told us last week that she knew would not ‘protect against infection’ and was ‘overplayed’ by health officials."
“This Administration’s vaccine travel mandate is proof of Biden’s xenophobia and his refusal to move forward as scientific information continues to proliferate. They are either completely delusional and in denial of basic facts and science, or in order to continue advancing to the role of a totalitarian dictator,” he added.
The FDA continues to insist the vaccine is “safe and effective,” while critics point out a host of issues, including irregular menstrual cycles, waning efficacy in later months and heart issues in young men.
It was signed by seven other House Republicans, including Illinois Rep. Mary Miller, Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie, South Carolina Rep. Ralph Norman, Texas Rep. Randy Weber, Florida Rep. Brian Mast, Missouri Rep. Billy Long and Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs.
A number of House Republicans have introduced legislation to put an end to vaccine and mask mandates. In late September, a group of House Republicans introduced a bill that would prohibit federal agencies from implementing vaccine mandates.
The Daily Caller contacted The White House about the letter, to which they did not immediately respond.
