The spice of life

We received an unusual number of letters to the editor in praise of our July 27 issue. I’m not trying to brag—as I said, it was unusual! The theme of much of the encouragement was the issue’s variety: it covered the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the 1960s radical theology movement, paid medical leave in the church, the importance of childhood play, and a defense of religious conversion. Not to mention some fascinating book reviews and poems. (You can check out the entire issue here.)

Our latest content on the web is also incredibly varied. Scroll below for articles about the film Fire Island, the World Council of Church’s dilemma over Russia, the role of the Church in addressing climate change, and a book excerpt about abolitionist spirituality. Our video of the week is a conversation with poet Bonnie Thurston about her most recent poem in the Century. I’m a huge fan of Bonnie’s poetry, so this was delightful for me.

[Note: if you’d like to write a letter to the editor that could appear in a future issue of the Century, just email [email protected].]

Fighting climate change one small act at a time

“What’s the point? We aren’t going to solve climate change with light bulbs and solar panels. That’s a question worth taking seriously, and it has long been important for Christians. One answer lies in the distinction between being a sign and being a solution.”

Practicing abolitionist spirituality

“The notion that racism will never end is just one example of what I call White noise: racist ideas, speech, silence, and misrepresentations that protect and perpetuate Whiteness.”
