A partnership day of action in July hailed a success

day of action

Activity took place across the ward which we thoroughly enjoyed supporting and getting involved in.

We did door knocking for Safe and Well Checks in the Whitemoor area. where the Fire Service fitted smoke alarms, and other partners offered advice on employment/health and other neighbourhood concerns.

There were further speeding operations, high visibility policing patrols on the trams, deep cleans and fly tipping enforcement and education.

Our REACT parking enforcement team also visited local schools where we know parking can cause issues.

We also attended a free Health and Wellbeing Funday on Vernon Park which was put on as part of the day. Hundreds of families turned out to participate in a range of free activities – including exercise tasters, play and crafts, whilst partners and local community organisations offered information on health and employment, COVID vaccinations and other advice.

The weather was kind to us all and lovely feedback was received by attendees - thank you!

Supporting local residents in these difficult times

We recognise that some of our residents may be particularly struggling at the moment with rising bills and the costs of living. We have supported a number of initiatives including financial support to local food banks one of which provided Christmas food hampers to those most vulnerable families at Southwark Primary School last Christmas.

More recently we funded the production of this useful support telephone number leaflet which we hope may be of use. Please do get in touch with us if you would like further help.

Community Planting

bulb planting

Local school children from Southwark School (left) recently highlighted with us how they would like to see more plants and trees as they rightly pointed out are so important to local wildlife and the environment.

As a result we gave out various bulbs and forget-me-not seeds to community groups and local schools that wanted to brighten up our neighbourhood.

Whitemoor Primary School also did a fantastic job helping our Parks team to plant 150 new trees in an hour on Whitemoor park in February.

Jubilee celebrations across Basford

jubilee in basford

We were really pleased to see and participate in an array of Jubilee celebrations across the ward in June.

There were a number of street parties and events arranged by local community organisations including St Aidan’s Church, Stockhill Tenants and Residents Group (SALTAR) and the 3G’s Group.

We also supported an event organised by the African Women Empowerment Forum which included live performances and a celebration of African dress.

Basford Big Spring Clean!

litter pick

Thank you to all the volunteers that participated in our Spring Clean which took place earlier in the year between March and June.

Councillor Mumtaz joined an organised litter pick in the Heathfield area. We know there are a number of Clean Champions across the Basford ward that continue on a regular basis to help keep the area clean.

More recent litter picks have been undertaken by local school children including Old Basford Primary School as part of our Day of Action – thank you to all who are helping to keep Basford clean!

Don't forget, it's not too late to get a FREE litter-picking kit when you sign up to become a Clean Champion!

Toxic air hurts our families - let's make a change

anti idling

Reducing air pollution for our residents is still very much a priority for us. We were out on the campaign again back in March alongside our Parking React team talking to motorists outside our local primary schools and again as part of the Day of Action.

We wanted to remind motorists to turn off their engines whilst stationary or waiting. ‘Idling’ is when a vehicle’s engine is left running while parked, stationary, or when waiting at junctions or traffic lights – which contributes both to toxic air pollution locally and the global climate emergency.

Local children helped design our campaign leaflets which we gave to local parents.

Drivers must help to reduce the harm to themselves, their friends, family and neighbours by turning off their engines whenever their car is not moving, and especially at schools and childcare settings.

New homes for Basford

daybrook

We were pleased to see new tenants move in last November to the new housing development, named Daybrook Mews, which were built on land off Tunstall Drive, on the Heathfield estate.

The development comprises five two-bed houses and 12 one-bed apartments. All have been built to high energy efficiency standards and offer warm, secure and affordable modern homes that have gone to local people on the city’s council housing waiting list. Many of the new homes have been allocated to existing council tenants moving into more suitable accommodation, freeing up their former homes for someone else on the waiting list. This development will help to regenerate a site which was no longer fit for purpose, we are helping to provide new homes for affordable rent, which will help meet the needs of local people waiting for a home.

We are yet again pleased to be funding the return of the Jelly Fish theatre to our ward who will be providing FREE family theatre performances on Stockhill and Vernon Parks this August.

Come and meet the outrageous mermaids and fantastical sea creatures who live in the wonderful "Wagon of Dreams" - a playful, inventive family show, set on a retro caravan: packed with puppetry, music and laughter.

Bring a blanket to sit on. All performances are relaxed with integrated Sign Supported English. Just turn up - no booking needed. Most suitable for age 4 - 8, and enjoyed by everyone.
