ANNOUNCEMENTS

Members: Today is the last day to apply for vacant Steering Committee seats

Applications for vacant DSA-LA Steering Committee seats will close tonight at 11:59pm and are open to members who have been in good standing for at least one year from June 11, 2022. We will prioritize candidates from marginalized communities. Please see the members-only email from July 26 for more details on how to apply!

Tell LA City Council to Repeal 41.18!

Tuesday, August 2 @ 9:00 am

The community flooded City Hall inside and out last Wednesday to protest the expansion of 41.18 but the fight is not over. Council delayed the vote to Tuesday August 2nd in an attempt to erode our momentum and stifle our voices. We won’t let that happen. The fight now is to keep the pressure on!! See you Tuesday 9am. Bring a friend.

On Tuesday, August 2nd, LA City Council will be approving an ordinance that massively expands the City’s homelessness criminalization policy, 41.18. This expansion will add approximately 1,900 additional sites–a 376% increase in exclusionary zones across the city. 41.18 will cover at least 88 sq miles (that’s 20% of the entire city). We need EVERYONE to come out to City Hall on Tuesday, August 2nd at 9:00am and tell City Council that 41.18 is BAD POLICY and should be repealed.

Member Forum – General Election Electoral Endorsements

Saturday, August 6 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

DSA-LA is now considering two additional candidates for the chapter’s endorsement in the 2022 primary election: United to House LA, Ricardo Martinez for La Puente City Council, Rocío Rivas for LAUSD School Board District 2, and Estefany Castañeda for Centinela Valley Union High School District.

The Electoral Endorsement Forum will begin with introductions from and open Q&A with the candidates and ballot measure representatives. Following the Q&A, we will take a short break before transitioning to a closed deliberation session of the DSA-LA Membership. In the closed session, the Electoral Committee will present summary briefings on the races and districts, make a recommendation on endorsement, and DSA-LA members in good standing will debate reasons for or against supporting these candidates. All members will receive a ballot for consideration following the forum.

Across the country, foodservice workers are organizing in their workplaces and building worker power. If you work in a restaurant, bar, coffee shop, or other food establishment, join us at our biweekly meetings and help build a movement for solidarity and power within our industry, within our city.

Crisis Pregnancy Center Action Planning

Monday, August 1 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The Mutual Aid committee is hosting a planning meeting to discuss having an action to counter the misinformation and harmful practices that crisis pregnancy centers continue to perpetuate.

In the wake of Roe v. Wade being overturned there has been an outpouring of support and actions to provide aid to abortion clinics and other providers that deal in reproductive health. However we believe that there needs to be more done to address those that purposely use misinformation and intimidation to force people to not have abortions.

Some of the information we will be using will be from this google drive from “Operation Save Abortion” that is a part of the Abortion Access Front.

Political Education Facilitator Training and Childcare for All Event Planning

Tuesday, August 2 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Are you interested in hosting events in your neighborhood where your friends and neighbors can learn more about DSA and our vision for Los Angeles? Want to help spread a socialist understanding of universal childcare? In this special training, we will also look at how to put together a successful political education event and walk through the upcoming Childcare for All modules.

The key questions that will be answered by this training are:

  • Why is political education important?
  • What is the role of the facilitator?
  • What are concrete tools to facilitate?
  • How can I address common roadblocks to create a conversation that flows?
  • What can I do to build a successful political education event?
  • How can I use this event (or ones like it) to advance our political goals?

The skills and tools covered in this training are applicable in any meeting where participants will be discussing new ideas, so we welcome anyone interested in learning more about facilitation.
