There are more fights than just congress. I’ve always encouraged people to find a local race they care about — a race that fights for working families and marginalized communities on the ground and isn’t afraid to take on the biggest challenges.
That’s why I’m endorsing my colleague, Kai Kahele, as he returns home to Hawaiʻi, his ʻohana (family), and his community to run for governor. And I’m encouraging folks to support him, too.
Kai is a Native Hawaiian running in the primary for governor. He’s up against an established career politician who has taken enormous corporate money from outside Hawaiʻi, including corporate developers, big tobacco, big pharmaceuticals, and the fossil fuel industry. Kai has pledged to reject all corporate money — and take no more than $100 from individual donors.
The stakes for Hawaiʻi couldn’t be higher, as they face an immediate housing crisis, a polluted aquifer from the US Navy, ongoing exploitative tourism, and devastating impacts from climate change. It’s time for Hawaiʻi to be led by people who understand their communities and are from their community — not bought-out politicians who will continue to sell Hawaiʻi to the highest bidder.
Kai is running a true, grassroots movement powered off small dollar donations. He’s a champion of our working families, marginalized communities, and Native Hawaiians. He will fight for Hawaiʻi’s local working families and stand up to the outside influences that have controlled Hawaiʻi for far too long.
