Tonight, Ryan will join a virtual forum led by the Racial Justice Network. Naturally, we expect police reform to be a discussion topic. It's a critical aspect of public safety reform, so we just wanted to reiterate Ryan's stance here.
Ryan believes there are many service-minded officers in Minneapolis and across our county. But, as we've all seen in the Human Rights Report released on the Minneapolis Police Department earlier this year, there is a cultural issue that must be addressed.
Ryan's bill to recruit more and better peace officers was blocked from moving forward by a GOP-led Senate earlier this spring. Ryan still believes that one of the most essential ways to get crime under control is to first improve the pool of police officers by bringing in more officers with a community-based mindset.
As County Attorney, Ryan has made it clear that his office will work collaboratively with law enforcement and the community to restore public safety in our neighborhoods. He supports a deliberate plan for rebuilding in the ranks of law enforcement in our county.
Click here to tune into the forum tonight at 6:30 p.m.
Thank you!

Subject: limited police resources
John –
An effective system of public safety must include improvements to the investigation tools that police departments use, it must include community members, and it must include a commitment to transparency by leadership.
If you haven’t yet, I encourage you to take a look at the priorities I’ve detailed in my P3 plan for public safety for how I intend to collaborate with local police departments and public safety agencies to address rising crime.
Prosecuting violent crime and policing improvements are two of my top priorities. But our police departments have dwindling investigative resources, even for the most serious crimes. That’s why it’s critical that we work in partnership with community organizations, and state and federal law enforcement to make the biggest impact for our community.
I've met and spoken with many chiefs and officers over the past year and it's clear to me that we have many committed officers who go to work each day with the goal of serving our communities. But we need more officers who show up ready to serve.
The peace officer recruitment bill I introduced in the state House earlier this spring, in collaboration with the Department of Public Safety, would have been a strong step toward improving our law enforcement issues - both with staffing and culture.
As I work to strengthen the networks between prosecutors, local law enforcement, and our other partners, will you work with us to help mend community-police relations? Add your name now to let us know we can count on your involvement!
Sincerely,
Ryan
