We have more ways to stay connected in August! This includes making sure our Senators continue to hear from us encouraging their support of the Respect for Marriage Act, another great Something to Talk About LIVE! episode and exciting August edition of our PFLAG Connects: Communities AAPI virtual support meeting.

Support

Join us for a Special August PFLAG Connects: Communities AAPI Meeting with Terry Hu

Join us for this very special August virtual support meeting where attendees will hear from Terry Hu about their experience as a queer, non-binary, Asian American actor making headlines for their groundbreaking role as ‘A-spen,’ Disney’s first live-action nonbinary lead in an original film, "ZOMBIES 3." Registrants for the event will also receive a link to view the film.

PFLAG Connects: Communities meetings provide a safe, virtual, moderated space where people with shared experiences can connect each month. Our current communities gather people of Latino, Black/African American, and Asian American and Pacific Islander backgrounds to gain support, ask questions, and learn from others who have been through similar experiences.

The AAPI virtual meetings are open to parents, family members, and members of the LGBTQ+ community who are AAPI. Each meeting will be led by members of the AAPI community who will guide you in receiving support, giving support, and finding resources to help you, your family, and your community.

Three Steps to Being a Better Communicator and Inviting Others In

August 2nd marks #InvitingInDay. It can be hard to invite others into conversations and help them grow but putting that work in can be so worth it to help others be better allies.

  1. Learn: Check out pflag.org/our-story to help you learn more about PFLAG’s nearly 50-year history so that you can talk with others about our story, mission, and values no matter where you are on your communications journey.
  2. Watch: Re-watch some episodes of PFLAG Academy Online, including Be Kind, Rewind and its sequel training, of sorts, Be Kind, Not Just Nice: Transforming Your Conversations to learn skills to communicate with kindness even in tough situations. Consider rewatching this PFLAG Academy Online about storytelling to learn to use the power of personal stories to change the world.
  3. Share: Stay connected with PFLAG on social media, and be sure to share content across your platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok. Remember to take part in Something To Talk About Live! every week at 4:30 PM ET / 1:30 PM PT.

Advocacy

Tell your Senators: Vote in Favor of the Respect for Marriage Act!

The Respect for Marriage Act (RMA) is expected to be up for a vote soon – as early as this week!

The freedom to marry is just one step on the march for LGBTQ+ equality, and that it’s one step closer to becoming federal law is big. Your help to mobilize LGBTQ+ allies in your area will ensure this bill becomes law.

We must get this important law passed AND use this momentum to protect LGBTQ+ people from discrimination in every other part of our lives. The work will most certainly continue.

Tell your Senators to vote in favor of the RMA, urgently, as the vote is quickly approaching!

Something to Talk About...Live!

Queer Horror Films to Keep You Up at Night

Queer characters and themes have always played an integral part in the telling of horror stories. And recent additions to the genre are finally allowing viewers to see LGBTQ+ characters as more than just the villain or homophobic tropes.

Join us this Thursday, August 4 at 4:30 PM ET / 1:30 PM PT for Something to Talk About Live where we will be discussing “The History of Queer Horror in 9 Movies", which appeared in A Little Bit Human by Rachael Green. We're excited to welcome producer, actress, and writer Lotti Pharriss Knowles as well as filmmaker, screenwriter, columnist, and actor Michael Varrati to the conversation!

You can join this discussion live! Mark your calendar for Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, August 4th at 4:30 PM ET / 1:30 PM PT on FacebookYouTubeTwitter, and LinkedIn.
