Recently, the Burmese military crossed a line and cruelly executed four democracy activists. This is an alarming development in the ongoing genocide and human rights violations occurring in Burma. The military has not executed activists since 1988 and after executing the four activists, it stated it will not hesitate to do so again. The military’s brazen violations and atrocities sent shockwaves through the international community and its defiance should serve as a wake-up call for immediate action. Congress must act. It is not enough to condemn the executions; these condemnations should be followed by direct action. That’s why we need to push the Senate to pass the BURMA Act. Earlier, the House passed its version, thanks to your letters and calls to your Representatives. Now, we need our Senators to follow suit. The BURMA Act not only condemns the actions of the military but also sanctions and holds it accountable. Additionally, the Act will provide much needed humanitarian and civil society aid to the people of Burma. Even one letter or one phone call can make all the difference. With the military moving towards arbitrary executions of civilians, we can’t afford to wait any longer to help the Burmese people. The persecution of the Rohingya and other minorities by the Burmese military has claimed tens of thousands of lives and will continue unless Congress steps up and takes action. Join us and TAKE ACTION - Urge your Senators to support the BURMA Act.
Sincerely, Iman Awad Emgage Action Policy Director
