John, this is huge:
The movement has made some huge advances in the fight for a Green New Deal in the past few weeks. Here are some organizing victories:
1. Sunrise El Paso, partnered with Ground Game Texas, just notched a pretty cool victory by getting enough signatures to put a climate charter vote to the ballot.
This climate charter program is inspiring because we're bypassing the need for famous politicians and celebrities or billionaires to save the day. The people of El Paso have chosen the path of climate justice.
2. Two weeks ago, 17 congressional staffers sat in at Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s office in the Senate, demanding that he reopen climate negotiations. And thanks to their tireless work — and every young person who organized for climate justice, $369 billion in climate spending is potentially back on the table.
John, while these victories are huge, the fight’s not over yet.
While we’ve won these victories, Exxon made $18,000,000,000 this year. Big Oil is literally profiting off our destruction.
And all the while, oil barons, billionaires and the Far Right try to water down and impede our progress - so their rich friends get richer while the rest of us suffer.
We will not let our communities suffer at the hands of CEOs & corrupt politicians. We will never stop fighting for what we deserve. We will never stop fighting to strengthen our communities and win a Green New Deal.
Shoutout to organizers everywhere — from El Paso to D.C. — for their tireless work that has brought us steps closer to a Green New Deal for all.
In solidarity,
Team Sunrise
