Dear Friend --

I’m in New York, where the 191 member countries of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) will start a review <[link removed]> of that treaty at the United Nations. ICAN is here to make sure that the successful outcomes from Vienna- the condemnation of nuclear threats and the action plan for disarmament, add impetus and urgency to this month-long meeting.

This is the first review conference since nuclear weapons became illegal under international law through the TPNW in 2021, it’s the first chance to confront Russia directly about their threats to use nuclear weapons. This meeting is an opportunity to not only call out all five nuclear-armed NPT member states forviolating their disarmament obligations under the NPT, but also to push back against the increasing risks of nuclear use and reliance on nuclear weapons by others, including the states talking about hosting US and Russian nuclear weapons on their territory.

The pressure is high on all states to show they mean business at this RevCon if the NPT is to remain a credible instrument for disarmament and non-proliferation. There can be no hiding behind vague affirmations and empty promises this time; all states must condemn the recent threats to use nuclear weapons, the increase and modernisation of nuclear arsenals, and the increased role of nuclear weapons in security doctrines.

As ICAN, we’re on the ground to make sure they feel this pressure. Nuclear weapons are illegal under international law and the NPT review conference must harness the energy that came out of Vienna and build on the achievements <[link removed]> of the TPNW. All month, we’ll be here to remind states that nuclear disarmament is possible, and that those countries that really want to end the nuclear threat forever are welcome to join the TPNW.

We will be keeping you posted about the RevCon, and any opportunities we get to apply pressure together. But in the meantime, can you help us spread the word on what’s at stake?
