It is a privilege to represent the people of Texas 23 in Congress. This past week, I spent time in communities along the southern border where I met with elected officials, business owners, and law enforcement for an update on the challenges they continue to face. I also met with community leaders in Uvalde to discuss mental health needs in the surrounding area. Please see below for some highlights on these visits. Border Security Congressional Delegation in Eagle Pass On Monday, I hosted 7 of my congressional colleagues in Eagle Pass, one of the most trafficked areas along the southern border. Our visit included meetings with local law enforcement, Border Patrol leadership, local elected officials, business owners, and Customs officers at the Camino Real Port of Entry. Through in-depth briefings and a ride-along with law enforcement, we witnessed the challenges our boots on the ground are facing every day. It is critical that my colleagues in Congress learn firsthand from border communities about the policy changes and resources that are needed to secure our southern border. New Funding for the El Paso County Veterans Park in Fabens I am proud to announce that $900,000 in grant funding from the Economic Development Administration has been secured for the El Paso County Veterans Park in Fabens. Aside from honoring our veterans, this project will spark tourism, create jobs, and advance economic opportunity for the region. Mental Health Roundtable Discussion in Uvalde Many communities in rural Texas are faced with a severe shortage of mental health resources. To discuss solutions for these treatment gaps, I convened a roundtable with leadership at Nuestro Centro de Salud in Uvalde where we talked about grant opportunities, workforce issues, and the growing need for additional mental health clinics. Bipartisan Visit with Border Patrol in Del Rio Our district remains at the center of the southern border crisis, and it is past time for Congress to put politics aside and deliver solutions. That is why I was honored to host my Democratic colleague, Congressman Darren Soto (D-FL), in Del Rio for a briefing with Border Patrol. Improving our border security must be a bipartisan issue. Honored by the Wounded Warrior Project On Wednesday afternoon, I was honored with a plaque from the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) for my work in Congress on behalf of service members. As a Navy veteran, I will always stand by the brave men and women of the military who sacrifice so much to defend our country. I am grateful to the WWP for the aid it provides to injured service members and their families. 2022 Congressional App Challenge Student registration is now open for the 2022 Congressional App Challenge.
