What an incredible achievement for the Lionesses yesterday – not only for their historic win, but also the huge legacy this will leave for the future of women’s and girls’ sport. The England team’s fantastic 2-1 victory against the eight-time European Champions at a sold-out Wembley is a huge achievement and sets an example which will inspire girls and women today and for future generations.
We’re hugely proud of them and have shown our support with the country’s largest flag on the Council House. We’re also proud of the local women who are competing on the world stage at the Commonwealth Games. Along with Notts-born goalie Mary Earps who played such a vital role throughout the Lionesses’ European Championship campaign including last night’s final, Nottingham/Nottinghamshire has a score of women taking part in the 2022 Commonwealth Games representing Team England and we wish them every success during the games.
The council has been behind the award-winning This Girl Can campaign which has inspired thousands of women in Nottingham to take part in sports and physical activity. We will continue to promote sporting opportunities for girls and women in Nottingham to help them to reach their personal goals, whether that’s improved fitness and health or world-beating success. Love Parks Week is back, taking place from 29 July to 5 August, giving people across the country the chance to shout about their wonderful green spaces. Whether it’s walking the dog, picnicking with friends or pushing our little ones on a playground swing, our parks give our communities, our children and our pets a vital space to play, grow and bond.
The week is also a chance to celebrate and thank the people who make out parks so special. Council staff and many wonderful volunteers work hard all year to maintain and protect our green spaces and I’d like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to them for their marvellous efforts.
The best way to find out what is happening in parks across Nottingham is to follow https://www.facebook.com/NottinghamParks on Facebook.

Business & IP Centres support local entrepreneurs to start, manage and expand successful small businesses, and from March 2021 to March 2022, over 1,000 attendees received free business support from the Nottinghamshire Centre. 39% of these attendees were aspiring entrepreneurs seeking to start their own business and 53% were looking to grow an existing business.
The direct face-to-face support available at BIPCs can open up the path to entrepreneurship for anyone with a business idea, regardless of their background. Consistently, over half of those who use a BIPC to set up a business are women, 14% have a disability, and a third are from under-represented ethnic backgrounds. More than triple the national averages for business ownership in the UK, this diverse user base speaks to the accessibility and community-based ethos of this library-based support.
Business & IP Centre Nottinghamshire (BIPC) is part of the BIPC National Network, led by the British Library. You can visit them at BIPC locals in selected libraries or online.

It was wonderful to experience the buzz and joy generated in the city centre by the Nottinghamshire Pride event at the weekend. It’s always a special occasion and this year it certainly felt as though the number of people involved has grown, creating a real carnival atmosphere and underlining the harmony that exists in our great city.
