POPULATION MATTERS SUPPORTERS' UPDATE

JULY 2022

Dear John,

The effects of climate change were clearly evident here in the UK in July,
with record 40ºC+ temperatures across the country. Sadly, all the
indications are that these extremes will become a regular occurrence.

World Population Day (WPD) arrived on 11 July, along with the new UN
Population Projections. There have also been awards aplenty, some given by
us to deserving activists around the world and another received by one of
our patrons. We report on the impact of your support for an Empower to Plan
partnership and examine the dangerous repression of reproductive rights in
many parts of the world. Finally, as we passed Earth Overshoot Day on 28
July, we detail some practical solutions individuals can take to help
counter the impact we're having on the natural world.

Thank you for supporting what we do.

The PM Team

Earth Overshoot Day, the day on which we have used all the earth's

World Population Day and UN Population Projections

On 11 July, World Population Day, the UN released their latest population
projections. The headlines are: there will be 9.7 billion of us in 2050 and
10.4 billion in 2100, but you can read more detail and analysis below. We
also took to the streets of London with our live population counter digivan
to help spread awareness of the global issues surrounding population
growth.

Elon Musk: Which Planet is He On?

This month we released a new report that challenges some of Elon Musk's
dangerous rhetoric around population. Unfortunately, his wealth and
celebrity give him carte blanche to make wild claims and many people accept
it as gospel. It's important to challenge his flimsy logic, so please do
read the report below and share it where you can.

Quote of the month

_“Those who fail to see that population growth and climate change are two
sides of the same coin are either ignorant or hiding from the truth. These
two huge environmental problems are inseparable and to discuss one while
ignoring the other is irrational.”_

- James Lovelock, Scientist, Environmentalist and PM Patron, who sadly
passed away on 26 July.
