GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS 2022 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday Extended to 14 Days As Florida families prepare for another school year, Governor Ron DeSantis is encouraging Floridians to save money on school supplies from July 25 – August 7. With the school year quickly approaching, the sales tax holiday is predicted to save Florida families more than $100 million this year. Department of Education Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr. and Department of Revenue Executive Director Jim Zingale joined Governor DeSantis in reminding Floridians they can save money on school supplies and clothing during the 2022 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday. “We are fiscally in the strongest position that the state of Florida has ever seen in modern history,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “The back-to-school tax holiday will allow families to be able to save for things that really matter.” During the 2022 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday qualifying items will be exempt from tax including: Learning aids selling for $30 or less per item, such as: Interactive Books, Jigsaw Puzzles, and Other toys that teach reading or math skills School supplies selling for $50 or less per item, such as: Binders, Calculators, Notebooks, Pens and pencils, and Lunch boxes. Clothing and footwear selling for $100 or less per item, such as: Backpacks, Pants, Shoes, Shirts, and Sweaters. Personal computers and related accessories purchased for noncommercial home or personal use selling for $1,500 or less per item, such as: Personal Computers, Flash drives, Computer batteries, Printers, and Headphones. “Back to school time can be stressful on families as they prepare for another year of learning,” said Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr. “As inflation continues to rise, it’s important for Floridians to take advantage of these savings while they can. Our incredible educators are looking forward to another exciting and productive school year!” For more information and to view lists of qualifying items, visit the Department of Revenue’s Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday website at floridarevenue.com/backtoschool. Governor Announces Initiative to Protect Floridians from ESG Financial Fraud Governor Ron DeSantis has announced legislative proposals and administrative actions to protect Floridians from the environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) movement which threatens the vitality of the American economy and Americans’ economic freedom by targeting disfavored individuals and industries to advance a woke ideological agenda. To view a one-pager with more information about ESG and today’s announcements, click here. “The leveraging of corporate power to impose an ideological agenda on society represents an alarming trend,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “From Wall Street banks to massive asset managers and big tech companies, we have seen the corporate elite use their economic power to impose policies on the country that they could not achieve at the ballot box. Through the actions I announced today, we are protecting Floridians from woke capital and asserting the authority of our constitutional system over ideological corporate power.” “Woke elites use ESG investing to prop up far left policies, undermining our national security and raising prices for Americans,” said Speaker Designate Paul Renner. “The Florida House will join the fight to stop woke financial titans who seek to dictate policy to Floridians regardless of our choices at the ballot box. I look forward to working with Governor DeSantis to protect Floridians’ pocketbooks and strengthen our national security.” Governor DeSantis’ proposed legislation for the 2023 Legislative Session will: Prohibit big banks, credit card companies and money transmitters from discriminating against customers for their religious, political, or social beliefs. Prohibit State Board of Administration (SBA) fund managers from considering ESG factors when investing the state’s money. Require SBA fund managers to only consider maximizing the return on investment on behalf of Florida’s retirees. The proposed legislation will amend Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices statute to prohibit discriminatory practices by large financial institutions based on ESG social credit score metrics. This “ESG score” is a framework created to force companies to meet ESG standards and arbitrarily includes metrics based on political affiliation, religious beliefs, certain industry engagement, and ESG benchmarks. Violations will be considered deceptive, and unfair trade practices will be punished according to the law. At the next State Board of Administration meeting, Governor DeSantis will propose an update to the fiduciary duties of the State Board of Administration investment fund managers and investment advisors to clearly define the factors fiduciaries are to consider in investment decisions. Environmental, social, or corporate governance factors will not be included in the state of Florida’s investment management practices. Governor DeSantis will work with likeminded states to leverage the investment power of state pension funds through shareholder advocacy to ensure corporations are focused on maximizing shareholder value, rather than the proliferation of woke ideology. $12 Million in Down Payment Assistance Awarded to Hometown Heroes Since June Governor Ron DeSantis announced that since the Hometown Heroes housing assistance program launched on June 1, Florida Housing Finance Corporation has provided more than $12 million in down payment assistance to Florida’s hometown heroes. Florida Housing received $100 million from the state Legislature this year to establish the Hometown Heroes program, which assists individuals such as law enforcement officers, educators, healthcare professionals, and active military or veterans in purchasing their first home in Florida. Since the program’s launch a total of $12.1 million in assistance has been provided to 843 families throughout the state. “Our law enforcement, first responders, nurses, and other hometown heroes work hard every day to take care of their communities,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “I’m proud that we have been able to give back by helping 800 families buy their first home in the communities they serve, and I look forward to seeing this project grow to help thousands more in the coming months.” “We’re extremely proud to share this milestone because it demonstrates how much the Hometown Heroes program is already helping hardworking Floridians throughout the state,” said Trey Price, Executive Director of Florida Housing Finance Corporation. “In less than two months, we have provided hundreds of families with the necessary financial assistance to purchase their first home. We’re grateful to Governor DeSantis and the Florida Legislature for their dedication to housing efforts and look forward to continuing to see the positive impacts of this program.” The Hometown Heroes program provides Florida’s frontline community workers in more than 100 eligible professions with down payment and closing cost assistance to help purchase a primary residence in the communities where they work. Eligible homebuyers will receive up to 5% of their first mortgage loan amount (up to a maximum of $25,000) in down payment and closing cost assistance in the form of a 0%, non-amortizing, 30-year deferred second mortgage. To qualify for this program, homebuyers must connect with one of Florida Housing’s participating loan officers, have a minimum credit score of 640, provide certification for one of the eligible occupations, and meet the income threshold for their county. On May 23, Governor Ron DeSantis announced the June 1 launch of the Florida Hometown Heroes Housing Program. The Hometown Heroes Housing Program is available to Floridians including law enforcement officers, firefighters, educators, healthcare professionals, childcare employees, and active military or veterans. Including this $100 million program, the Governor approved $363 million for affordable and workforce housing in the 2022-2023 budget, the highest total in 15 years. ATTORNEY GENERAL ASHLEY MOODY Florida Sheriff's Association Summer Conference This week, I joined law enforcement leaders from across our state at the 2022 Florida Sheriffs Association Summer Conference. It’s always an honor to address the brave men and women of Florida law enforcement. While speaking to these heroes, I highlighted our efforts to recruit qualified officers from across the nation to join our state’s ranks. During the conference, I had the privilege of recognizing Lee County Sheriff’s Deputy Raymond Arce. Before moving to Florida, Deputy Arce served in Chicago—where he felt he didn’t have the support of the community or its leaders. Searching social media for new opportunities, Deputy Arce came across outreach from Florida and heard our message of strong support for those who wear the badge. It inspired him to act. A few months later, he moved to Florida and joined our great law enforcement family. Deputy Arce is just one of a growing number of officers who are realizing that in Florida, we back the blue and our leaders appreciate their service and sacrifice. Last year, I created the Be A Florida Hero initiative—a statewide recruitment tool to help spread this important message and promote law enforcement career opportunities throughout the state. Thanks to Governor Ron DeSantis and our legislative leaders, we secured additional resources to recruit new officers as well as raises for current officers. I am excited that the country is taking notice of our strong support for those who swear an oath to protect and serve. By supporting these brave officers and giving them the tools, they need to succeed, we are building A Stronger, Safer Florida. [link removed] Avoid Summer Moving Scams Attorney General Ashley Moody is continuing the Summer Scams Series with a warning about moving. Summer is traditionally one of the most popular times of the year to move, and Attorney General Ashley Moody is issuing a Consumer Alert to help both current and new Floridians avoid scams. Moving can be stressful and scammers may take advantage of the situation to rip off consumers. Florida has recently seen a population boom. According to a U.S. Census report, Florida saw the second highest growth of any state in the nation last year—making it a target-rich state for anyone trying to take advantage of people relocating. Attorney General Ashley Moody said, “People are moving to Florida in droves, and many will spend the next few weeks relocating before the new school year begins. This season of high demand could attract scammers trying to take advantage of those moving their belongings. I am issuing a Consumer Alert highlighting common moving scams and how to avoid falling prey.” More. SENATOR MARCO RUBIO Rubio, Cotton, Colleagues Demand Answers on Biden's Proposed School "Gender Identity" Rule The Biden Administration intends to include “gender identity” as a protected category under Title IX, a change Senator Rubio says, “could erode women’s rights, free-speech rights, parental rights, and children’s safety and innocence.” U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Tom Cotton (R-AR) sent a letter to U.S. Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona demanding answers. “The Biden administration claims that Title IX, which was written to provide equal opportunities to women, protects men claiming to be women on the basis of their ‘gender identity.’ Consequently, your department has suggested that schools which prohibit males from using women’s bathrooms or playing women’s sports could be guilty of unlawful ‘discrimination.’ Your interpretation of Title IX will undermine that law’s very purpose by making schools and sports unsafe and unfair for women and girls. “Equally disturbing is the likelihood that your department will weaponize Title IX to force a radical gender ideology in K-12 classrooms. A number of troubling incidents suggest how your interpretation of Title IX could erode women’s rights, free-speech rights, parental rights, and children’s safety and innocence.” Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Josh Hawley (R-MO), and Mike Lee (R-UT) also signed the letter. Unity - Calling All Republicans Time to Come Together As we approach the 2022 mid-term elections and the 2024 presidential election, and in light of the abject failure of the Biden administration, we know that the very survival of our republic depends on the outcome of those elections. Therefore, we must stay unified.
