Discussions for a global oceans treaty have been going on since 2002 , and all the while things have only been getting worse for our oceans. Industrial fishing is driving species to the brink - we’ve lost 70% of sharks in the last 50 years alone. Since the talks began there have been 1000 marine heatwave days. Marine heatwaves cause algal blooms, coral bleaching and decimate kelp forests. This also results in mass die-offs of fish and the birds that feed on them. [1,2,3]
At present less than 1% of international waters are protected, and we are running out of time to turn things around before 2030. That’s why this meeting is so important, and we can’t let leaders kick the can down the road again or it will be too late. [4]
Will you take a couple of minutes to record a message for leaders to let them know in your own words why they have to act now to protect the oceans?
