Successful Partnership Day of Action

A partnership day of action in July hailed a success – activity took place across the ward  including door knocking for Safe and Well Checks where the Fire Service fitted smoke alarms alongside other partners who offered advice for employment/health and other neighbourhood concerns, speeding operation, mobility scooter security marking, deep cleans and fly tipping enforcement and education.

We used part of our local ward budget to put on a free Health and Wellbeing Funday at Bestwood Park church where hundreds turned out to participate in a range of activities – including sport and games, health advice and COVID vaccinations.

It was a great event supported by local community and voluntary organisations and support services.

Jubilee Celebrations across Bestwood

*We were really pleased to see and participate in an array of Jubilee celebrations across the ward in June.*

These included attending and supporting our local primary schools in their celebrations, street parties and community events. A Funday organised by the Bestwood Partnership took place at Bestwood Estate Community Centre and a 1950’s tea party we helped to fund was organised by Bestwood Park Church.

We further supported an event organised by the African Women Empowerment Forum which included live performances and a celebration of African dress.

Improvements to Sandy Banks Nature Reserve

*In the Spring we asked local residents for their views on what improvements could be made to Sandy Banks Nature Reserve in Bestwood Park.*

The site is a valuable area for many animals and birds including breeding grounds for butterflies and important insects. We look forward to working alongside the Parks team over the next few months to move some of these ideas into reality! Favoured options included a picnic area/benches, more conservation work, further planting and a dog agility area.

Bestwood Big Spring Clean - thank you!

*We’d like to give a big thank you to those who participated in the Spring Clean during March to June this year. *

One clean up was led by the Eden Youth Project and their volunteers. They undertook a week of activity in June where volunteers completed a massive painting project to clean up the grotty 4-way subways in Top Valley. Thanks to their hard work and paint funded by ourselves and the Bulwell Forest Councillors these have been most spruced up.

Students help create the future of council homes in Nottingham

*The Eastglade housing development - turning a longstanding underused grotspot into well needed housing - is progressing well. *

As part of this we are pleased that students at Nottingham’s Bulwell Academy will see their designs brought to life in new build homes as part of an interior design challenge set to them by Nottingham City Homes (NCH).

A Year 10 group were set the challenge as part of an interior design competition late in 2021. Students submitted their entries which were then judged by a panel of experts alongside Councillor Jay Hayes, and the two winners will now see their designs turned into reality at NCH’s Eastglade development in Bestwood.   

Nathan Barlow, Teacher of Architecture and Interior Design at the Bulwell Academy, said, “The competition has taught the students about how interior design works, including how to create mood boards, how to estimate costs, and how to work to a brief. NCH has given talks and delivered workshops, and it’s great that now, the winning designs will be brought to life in new homes that will go to Nottingham families in need of housing.”

The winners of the competition are 14 year old Eva Lacy and 15 year old Caitlin Keward. Eva said: “I was shaking when I found out – completely overwhelmed! It’s still not quite sunk in that my design is going to become a real house!” Caitlin added: “I was speechless! Now it’s started to sink in though, and i’m extremely proud of what I have designed and managed to achieve”.

Luke Johnson, NCH Project Manager for the Eastglade development, said: “All the competition entries were of an exceedingly high standard, and the winners stood out based on the amount of thought and effort they put into all elements of the project, and the way their designs met the brief.”
