Nevada rejected Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020, but the contests were close, decided by fewer than 35,000 votes. The 2022 Senate race in Nevada will test whether pro-democracy forces can maintain and solidify their gains in the state — and help retain control of the U.S. Senate.
Incumbent Dem Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto faces former Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt, who led state efforts to overturn the 2020 results by claiming voter fraud with zero evidence. Laxalt has gone Ultra-MAGA, despite being the grandson of long-time Nevada Sen. Paul Laxalt, an icon of the GOP establishment. Alarmed by extremist GOP candidates on the ballot, moderate Republican leaders in Nevada recently endorsed Democrats.

The state trends bode well for Cortez Masto; however, the divisive national picture makes this race very competitive. Cortez Masto needs to have massive turnout in Clark County and Las Vegas to offset Laxalt’s advantages across the rest of the state.
