Dear John,
The latest monthly inflation report showed that the annual rate of inflation is now running at 9.1 percent, the highest inflation rate in 40 years.
As soon as those numbers came out, you could practically hear the cheering from the headquarters of the Republican National Committee in Washington, D.C.
Republicans are cheering because they’re convinced that inflation is their ticket to winning a majority in the House and Senate, putting the very same people who are behind the January 6 attack and the end of our fundamental rights in charge of Congress.
But that will happen only if we fail to reach the American people with the truth. The reality is that nearly everything the Republicans say about inflation is wrong, and the policies they would put in place would make things even worse.
That’s why Inequality Media Civic Action is producing dozens of viral videos and explainer posts to share with millions and millions of people via social media.
Will you chip in and help us continue to produce and distribute our proven-effective videos to make sure the American people know the truth and see through the GOP's lies?
Republicans say that inflation is being caused by Democrats and so-called “big government” spending. They’re literally calling it “Bidenflation.”
But the truth is that big corporations are making massive profits by jacking up prices while using inflation as a cover.
Big Oil is a prime culprit. Gas prices are up about 60 percent from last year, contributing to almost half the rise in inflation in June. As a result, Shell is expecting profits to nearly triple, adding $1 billion to its bottom line. BP reports its largest quarterly profit in a decade. Chevron and ExxonMobil are enjoying gushers.
Congress could provide relief for consumers with a windfall profits tax on Big Oil and food monopolies that would pass along the proceeds to struggling working people. But Republicans are against it.
Congress could lower drug prices by allowing Medicare to negotiate with drug companies. They could increase taxes on big businesses and wealthy individuals to tamp down overall demand. They could strengthen antitrust enforcement to increase competition and break up monopolies like Amazon.
But Republicans are against all of that.
Let’s be clear: The biggest causes of inflation are limited supplies and pent-up demand in a global economy that is still trying to emerge from the pandemic. Also, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has disrupted global supplies of oil, gas, and wheat. China’s COVID-19 lockdowns are further squeezing the supply chain. And, as we continue to highlight, the monopolization of America is a prime culprit that the corporate media and Republicans continue to overlook.
If we let Republicans fool voters into blaming President Biden and putting them in charge of Congress, things will undoubtedly get much, much worse.
No one does a better job of explaining these complex issues than the team here at Inequality Media Civic Action, and we’re making tremendous progress. Polls show that a growing number of Americans see corporate profiteering as a prime driver of inflation. But the November elections are approaching fast, and we need to reach millions more people to prevent the radical Trump Republicans from retaking Congress and exacerbating our current crises.
Will you make a donation and help us continue to produce and distribute our proven-effective videos spreading the truth about inflation and calling out the GOP’s lies?
Thanks for standing on the side of truth,
Robert Reich
