WORLD RANGER DAY:
Celebrating the work of the Keepers of the Wild
Having people on the ground is hugely import to the success of any conservation project and World Land Trust (WLT) is proud to have been able to fund 57 rangers working with 16 partners across 13 countries in 2022. To celebrate these 57 – and our supporters who make the rangers’ vital work possible – we’ve prepared a new report on the Keepers of the Wild programme that you can read below.

In this report, you’ll hear first-hand accounts from the men and women who walk on the front line of conservation. You’ll meet rangers like Gabriel León, who safeguards endangered parrots in Venezuela, and Angie Rivera, who works with Honduran communities to protect watersheds key for both people and wildlife.

Monitoring wildlife, placing camera traps, tackling wildfires, engaging with stakeholders, patrolling for poachers and illegal loggers – no day is the same for a ranger. Their arsenal of skills and intimate knowledge of the land they protect are invaluable components in our conservation networks. That’s why your donations mean so much to our partners.

Our new report also includes an update on the Pumas of Estancia la Esperanza in Argentina, and news of a high honour bestowed on a Keeper of the Wild family described as “the eyes and ears of the forest” by Ecuador’s Fundación EcoMinga (Click the image below to read it).

Animals are often the only contact that a ranger has when out in the field, but as a Keepers of the Wild supporter, you’re right there alongside them, ensuring nature does not stand alone in its hour of need. Thank you for trusting in WLT, our partners and their rangers as we work together to protect the world’s wildlife and wild places.

IUCN AFRICA PROTECTED AREAS CONGRESS 2022

WLT TEAM MEETS NEW AND EXISTING PARTNERS
AT LANDMARK CONSERVATION SUMMIT

Held last week in Kigali, Rwanda, the inaugural IUCN APAC was the first ever continent-wide gathering designed to set out plans for the future of conservation in Africa. African leaders, NGOs, citizens and interest groups met to discuss the role of protected areas in safeguarding wildlife and habitats, delivering ecosystem services, and promoting sustainable development, while conserving Africa’s cultural heritage and traditions.

WLT team members Richard Cuthbert (Director of Conservation) and Mary McEvoy (Carbon Programme Manager) were in attendance alongside Mercy Kariuki, who joined WLT in early July as our new Africa Programmes Manager. The summit was a wonderful opportunity for the team to renew friendships with existing partners and meet new ones for the first time, including Big Life Kenya, Gorongosa Project and Wild Tomorrow Fund.

After an informative and inspirational agenda at APAC, the WLT team crossed over to Uganda for site visits with ECOTRUST, Kara-Tunga Fund and Environmental Defenders. Keep an eye on our social media channels for updates from the field!
