JOHN -
As I have met with people across the district, I have heard stories about caring for family members that are similar to my family’s experience. My dad struggles with Alzheimer’s disease, and my mom is his full-time caregiver. My siblings and I are there to help, and we are so thankful that the Cranston Adult Day Care Center gives my mom a break a couple days a week.
Being a full-time caregiver for a family member or friend is rewarding and challenging. It often means they sacrifice their own needs.
I believe supporting our family caregivers is a public health issue, and I will work in Congress to provide the resources and support infrastructure that they need.
I will strengthen Lifespan Respite Care legislation, which provides short-term relief for caregivers so they can take time for themselves.
I support expanding Medicaid coverage to provide additional support for family caregivers. This is also included in the Build Back Better proposal, which would permanently improve Medicaid coverage for home care services for seniors and people with disabilities.
I also believe that creating a permanent, broad-based national paid leave program is essential for helping caregivers balance their work and family responsibilities. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Congress passed temporary paid leave for some workers, and I will work to pass permanent paid leave to support working family caregivers in all sectors and at all times.
I’m passionate about delivering on these legislative items, not just because they are personal to me, but because these are the same issues that I hear when I am talking to people. If you want me standing up for you and your family on these issues in Congress, please consider donating to our campaign today.
