half-baked, idiotic calls to ban abortions within five weeks of pregnancy won't make abortion disappear.
Friend,
I wanted to make sure you saw this, because I was almost in disbelief when it aired (almost).
In the wake of the Roe v. Wade decision, my opponent Doug LaMalfa was on the House floor calling for a nationwide ban on abortions once women hit their 5th week of pregnancy.
This may come as a shock to guys like LaMalfa, but many women don't even realize they're pregnant until well after the 5th week. Unfortunately for us, it’s guys like LaMalfa who are also the most determined to impose their right-wing cultural beliefs rather than use their heads.
I'm no fan of elective abortion, but half-baked, idiotic calls to ban abortions within five weeks of pregnancy won't make abortion disappear. Instead, it will just drive abortion underground - and we will return to pre-1973 where women seeking care will turn to unsafe, illegal providers.
It frustrates me to no end when these fake "don't-tread-on-me" types like LaMalfa turn around and trample on a woman's right to reproductive privacy. These are core components of individual liberty. The fact that LaMalfa can’t see that highlights just how anti-democratic the modern GOP has become.
