Call me by his name: Lil Nas X has become a queer icon in Nigeria
For our July Digital Cover Story, we talked to queer Nigerians who have faced the hard truth that coming out also means coming to terms with the fact that it may put their lives in danger. Many of them have begun to live vicariously through Lil Nas X's unapologetic approach to life as a queer person.
How does the American rapper inspire them? And why has he become the face of LGBTQ Pride in Nigeria? We went to Africa to find out.
“He’s made me feel seen!” a fan who asked to remain anonymous told LGBTQ Nation. “Everything he’s doing… everything he’s being. That’s me! Sometimes I wish I could take his place and live in his shoes for a week. I’m not yet out to my family, but someday, when I summon his level of courage, the world will not be able to stop me.”
