JOHN,
This week, Republicans in the US Senate let party politics and political stunts stand in the way of urgently needed support for our veterans exposed to burn pits.
The PACT Act would provide health care and benefits to roughly 3.5 million veterans injured by exposure to toxic substances during their service.
This bill had already passed the Senate by a resounding, bipartisan 84-14 vote in June; due to a technical language error, it had to be voted on again.
What was different this time around was that, hours before the PACT Act came to the floor, Democrats had reached a momentous agreement on healthcare and climate action. This time, the PACT Act failed 55-42 because of retaliation by Republicans. This is outrageous.
Vermont National Guard members, enlisted service members, veterans, and their families will suffer. As the proud sister of an Iraq war veteran, I feel this insult.
Earlier this month, when I unveiled my veterans’ affairs agenda at a press conference in Colchester, I referred specifically to the PACT Act as a legislative priority. At that time, the bill appeared to be on a glide path to passage this session. Now – the cowardice of partisanship has likely delayed legislative action until the next Congress. While we wait for a new Congress to be elected, countless veterans will needlessly suffer – physically and financially – from injuries sustained in service to our country. We don’t have time for partisan stunts.
In Congress, I won’t be afraid to put party politics aside. I will work day in and day out to heal our democracy and bridge the divide. I will never lose sight of the needs of Vermonters – and I’ll keep fighting for the support Vermont veterans and service members deserve.
Yours,
Molly
