Congressman Al Green Proud to Have Voted for Federal Funds that Contributed to Houston’s Gun Buyback Initiative
(Houston, TX) — On Saturday, July 30, 2022, Congressman Al Green released the following statement:
“I am proud to be joining Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, Harris County Precinct One Commissioner Rodney Ellis, and the Houston Police Department (HPD) for today’s Gun Buyback event, which can help reduce ongoing gun violence by getting guns out of our communities,” Congressman Al Green shared. “I am also proud that federal funds were involved in the creation of this Gun Buyback program. These funds played a vital role in making this event possible by going toward items including HPD property rooms, supplies, and gift cards. The $1 million allocated for Gun Buybacks in Houston are also part of over $50 million provided by Congress for the broader One Safe Houston program, a citywide violence reduction initiative.”
“The Gun Buyback operation allows firearm owners to voluntarily and anonymously turn in their unloaded firearms to law enforcement in exchange for gift cards, with gift card amounts ranging from $50 - $200, depending on the type of weapon relinquished,” Congressman Al Green stated. “I am hopeful that the public will do their part by coming out and participating to help reduce gun violence across the Houston area. All people of goodwill need to make an active effort to help public officials put an end to the firearm-related injuries and deaths repeatedly seen across our communities. Enough is enough.”
