Team,
As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I have the opportunity to play a meaningful role in shaping the investments our government makes. I'm proud to have secured recent investments that will make a difference in our community, boost our economy, and create jobs.
Here are just a few important wins for our region I was honored to support:
Investing in Jefferson County Infrastructure Projects:
Our region needs more affordable housing — period. That's why I'm proud these investments will go toward building affordable housing in Port Townsend and Port Hadlock and service residents at essential community locations.
Securing Additional Federal Funding to Support the Aberdeen-Hoquiam Flood Protection Project:
Our coasts are vulnerable to severe flooding due to weather-related events, king tides, and rising sea levels. These additional federal investments will build two levees to help protect the cities of Aberdeen and Hoquiam against coastal flood events. It will also enable more investment in affordable housing and economic development in the region - and save local residents millions of dollars in flood insurance costs.
Securing New Funding to Support Kids and Families:
There is no better investment we can make for our future than one that benefits our children. I'm proud to have secured new investments to help rural, under-resourced regions with nutrition assistance, early childhood education, and community and parent engagement.
Advancing New Federal Funding to Improve Health Care for Tribes on the North Olympic Peninsula:
The federal government has an obligation to fulfill its trust and treaty responsibilities and to make sure people have the resources they need to live healthy lives. That’s why I’m proud the Appropriations Committee has made progress to provide critical funding to advance projects that I advocated for which will make a big difference for Tribes on the Olympic Peninsula, including new health centers for the Makah Tribe and investments for the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe.
Helping Expand and Modernize the Port of Grays Harbor and Support Local Fishermen:
Our coastal fisheries and seafood industry are an essential part of our region’s economy. That’s why I’m committed to ensuring our ports and our fishermen have the resources they need to remain competitive in the Pacific Northwest. This is about jobs. I’m thrilled the House Appropriations Committee has advanced new funding I fought for to help modernize the Westport Marina and support local economic opportunities.
Team, I will never stop fighting for the folks all across our district and our region. The support from this grassroots team is integral to this work and is just one of the many reasons why I am grateful to advocate for you and our neighbors.
But there's more work to do, and I'm hoping I can count on your support to keep fighting! Next week is the primary, and I'm asking for your vote. Remember to drop off your ballot by 8 p.m. on August 2. >> [link removed]
As always, it's an honor to serve you,
Derek
