Over the last several years, we’ve seen too many newsrooms shutter. Communities all across the country have lost independent, credible and much-needed investigative reporting. As the nation’s oldest nonprofit newsroom, we have weathered threats to our very existence, and because of support from people like you, we are still here.

Last month, I told you about a libel lawsuit we’ve been fighting for more than three years, filed by Planet Aid ([link removed]) . Planet Aid’s lawsuit comes in response to our unfavorable but truthful reporting on the international aid group’s misuse of taxpayer funds. Our reporting raised significant questions about whether support from the U.S. and other governments actually was reaching the people it was intended to help or was being privately siphoned.

The cost of fighting this case has been steep – our legal fees alone have exceeded $7 million. Our reporters, editors and general counsel have spent countless hours fighting this case. We are still here thanks to generous pro bono representation.
