On Wednesday, People For co-founder Norman Lear celebrated his 100th birthday. We’re proud that after more than 40 years after our founding, we continue stronger than ever on our mission to protect and strengthen the American Way from far-right attempts to undermine it. As we celebrate People For’s history, and Norman reminisces on his life, please enjoy a video celebrating his birthday and a New York Times op-ed from Norman reflecting on the current state of the nation.

It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Norman Lear who has contributed more to the movement to defend our fundamental rights and democracy from the growing threat of far-right extremism.

From the combat missions he flew in World War II to defeat the rise of global fascism, to his founding of People For, Norman has dedicated his life to protecting the true ideals that America stands for: freedom, equality, opportunity, and justice for all.

So please help us celebrate the amazing milestone of his 100th birthday with a renewal donation in his honor to support the ongoing work of People For the American Way – if you donate before midnight Sunday your gift will be 100% MATCHED!

Supporters of Donald Trump at the January 6 insurrection.

As the House Select Committee presented damning evidence of Trump’s months-long campaign to overturn the election, which reached a crescendo in the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol, right-wing groups are trying to make sure that next time, Trump, or any other wannabe dictator, will be successful.

Around the country, far-right forces are seeking to seize control of state elections by pursuing secretary of state offices and taking over roles typically held by nonpartisan election workers. They’re spreading voter fraud conspiracy theories, casting doubt on the integrity of the elections. They’re no longer flirting with violent rhetoric – but embracing it.

Our country is at a pivotal moment. We are facing daunting challenges that have been building for generations. We need a movement suited to meet this moment and, because of your support, People For the American Way is well positioned to lead this vital work. Like our foremothers and forefathers who assembled at key moments in our history and found the courage and inspiration to fight injustice, we now must find similar courage and inspiration in each other. We’re bringing together elected officials, faith leaders, civil rights leaders, activists, and the most dynamic and dedicated members of any national progressive organization (you!) to make this the country that we all know American can be.

Picture of the US Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court has just finished one of its most notable and destructive terms in history. America is a fundamentally different country than it was just a year ago. The far-right justices have shown just how eager they are to transform our country with their ill-gained 6-3 majority. In the term that just ended, the Court has at times even become too radical for John Roberts. He can no longer control the destructive movement that he began to lead when he became chief justice in 2005.

We all know that what people do tells you more about them than what they say. That’s true for politicians, too.  A lot of politicians who posture as defenders of marriage just voted against the Respect for Marriage Act, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives on July 19, and would ensure that equal treatment of same-sex couples under federal law if passed by the Senate. As we know all too well, the right to marry has not always been protected for everyone.
