As the House Select Committee presented damning evidence of Trump’s months-long campaign to overturn the election, which reached a crescendo in the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol, right-wing groups are trying to make sure that next time, Trump, or any other wannabe dictator, will be successful. Around the country, far-right forces are seeking to seize control of state elections by pursuing secretary of state offices and taking over roles typically held by nonpartisan election workers. They’re spreading voter fraud conspiracy theories, casting doubt on the integrity of the elections. They’re no longer flirting with violent rhetoric – but embracing it. The Supreme Court has just finished one of its most notable and destructive terms in history. America is a fundamentally different country than it was just a year ago. The far-right justices have shown just how eager they are to transform our country with their ill-gained 6-3 majority. In the term that just ended, the Court has at times even become too radical for John Roberts. He can no longer control the destructive movement that he began to lead when he became chief justice in 2005. We all know that what people do tells you more about them than what they say. That’s true for politicians, too. A lot of politicians who posture as defenders of marriage just voted against the Respect for Marriage Act, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives on July 19, and would ensure that equal treatment of same-sex couples under federal law if passed by the Senate.
