Hi John,
I’m sure that as a supporter of Global Justice Now you’ll agree that no-one should have to make impossible choices like either feeding your family or buying vital medicines for yourself. Yet this is a reality for millions of people around the world. And the galling thing is it doesn’t have to be this way.
Our global healthcare system is built around protecting the eye-watering profits of big pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca.
Patents allow corporations like these to monopolise medicines so others can’t produce them and they can charge unbelievably high prices, blocking access for many low-income countries.
I recently wrote to ask if you can donate £5 to give our campaign the boost we need to fight for serious change to medicine monopolies? I’m writing today in case you missed my email and can help.
Yes, I'll donate ([link removed])
Even here in the UK, we’re not safe from the impact of medicine monopolies. The NHS is paying out huge sums to big business for drugs, seriously threatening its ability to run. Just last week, Pfizer was fined millions for overcharging the NHS for a life-saving epilepsy drug.
Like never before, the pandemic has shown just how broken the pharmaceutical industry is. Four times as many people have died from Covid-19 in the global south as rich countries like the UK. We can’t allow any more business as usual – people’s lives are at stake.
** Let’s make sure medicines are for people not corporate greed
------------------------------------------------------------
We aren’t alone in wanting change. You’re part of a global movement of activists, campaigners, health workers, scientists and more, fighting for a more equal healthcare system. Together we can make this a reality.
In South Africa, scientists have reverse engineered Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine. Instead of using this learning and know-how to make huge profits, they are sharing it with other countries around the world. Initiatives like these are proving there’s a better way than medicine monopolies. This is the kind of change we want to see, where medicines are used how they should be – to save lives.
Are you able to stand up for a fair healthcare system by donating today?

** The difference your donation will make
------------------------------------------------------------
Throughout the pandemic our government has shown whose side they’re really on – big pharma, acting repeatedly to protect their profits. Our government was one of the main blockers of initiatives at the World Trade Organisation which could have saved countless lives.
Along with people like you, we have been putting pressure on our government throughout the pandemic. And we can’t stop now.
Your donation could help us publish exciting research showing sustainable alternatives with which to lobby decision makers and expand the cracks in the support for big pharma. You can help us get more of the public behind our campaign as we keep exposing the failings of medicine monopolies in the media. Alongside this, our local activists will be having key conversations with the public, and with your help we can make sure they have the materials to do this.
You donation would also strengthen the movement for a better healthcare system by helping us co-ordinate with healthcare workers and trade unions, as well as campaigners and activists around the world.
Thank you for all that you do for our campaigns, and for considering helping us change the pharmaceutical industry for the better.
Best wishes
Tim Bierley

P.S. In case you missed my recent email, I’m writing to ask if you’re able to donate to give our campaigning the boost we need to fight for a fairer healthcare system and stand up to medicine monopolies. ([link removed])
