Dear neighbor,
Democrats in Congress are hard at-work advancing critical legislation to address the needs of American families and put people over politics. I’m pleased that this week Senate Democrats announced an agreement on the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, much-needed legislation that will help fight inflation, reduce the deficit, lower the cost of health care for millions, and combat the climate crisis by reducing carbon pollution 40 percent by 2030. This agreement signals important progress in our fight to lift up working families and protect our planet.
I’m also pleased that the House passed the CHIPS and Science Act, which will create jobs and lower costs of consumer products by boosting chip manufacturing here at home. This bill will set us on a strong path to compete globally in innovation and technology, and now heads to the President’s desk to be signed into law!
Rep. Lieu at Bill Signing Ceremony for the CHIPS and Science Act
Democrats are putting people over politics by focusing on lower costs, better paying jobs, and safer communities. On the other hand, Senate Republicans blocked a bipartisan, widely-supported bill to expand benefits for veterans exposed to toxins during their service. Why? Because they don’t approve of Democrats’ separate legislation to lower health premiums, reduce the cost of prescription drugs, and act to save our planet from the ongoing climate disaster. While they play their partisan games, Democrats will continue fighting for the people.
Here are some other items I’ve been working on this week:
- Helped pass a bill to ban assault weapons in the House.
- Applauded House passage of my bipartisan legislation with Representatives Robin Kelly and Jodey Arrington to prevent young children from ingesting button batteries, which can be very dangerous to a child’s health if swallowed.
- Voted in favor of the Big Cat Public Safety Act to prohibit private possession and breeding of big cats and to restrict direct contact between the public and big cats.
- Spoke on the House floor about Democrats’ work to reduce gas prices and create good-paying jobs.
- Helped pass Rep. Joe Neguse’s bill to protect our communities from catastrophic wildfires.
