Recession Built on Failed Policies in Washington
Friend,
On Thursday, our economy reported a -0.9% contraction.
Record high inflation and plummeting real wages have long been a recipe for a recession. The negative GDP report released yesterday makes clear what every American has felt for several months. Americans are struggling to afford the things their families need.
We could have avoided this.
Congress and the Administration need to address the pain American families are feeling from record inflation. We need to unleash American energy, stop reckless spending in Washington, and get back to the pre-pandemic policies that created record growth.
Unfortunately, we continue to see proposals in Congress that will increase taxes and spending. This is the wrong approach. The reckless policies we have seen put in place are causing record inflation. At the beginning of 2021, Congress passed $1.9 trillion in new spending. Many economists, including the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, have shown how this spending bill impacted inflation. Now, we are seeing proposals coming before Congress that would add fuel to the fire.
The inflation crisis needs to be addressed. I was frustrated this week with Congress's unwillingness to bring legislation to the floor to address this important topic. This morning I spoke on the House Floor expressing my frustration with Congress's inability to address inflation.
Rep. Steil Addresses Inflation Crisis on House Floor
It's time for Congress to meet the moment. Focus on policies that help to reduce costs, support families, and get our way of life back. We should be bringing bills to the House Floor that will unleash American energy, cut wasteful spending, and get our economy back to pre-pandemic levels. We have solutions that can be implemented.
As always, if you would like to share an opinion with me, or need assistance working with a federal agency, please do not hesitate to contact my office.
On Wisconsin,
Bryan Steil Member of Congress
