This Tuesday, July 26, the Care That Works Coalition joined the Office of Early Childhood Education and Mayor Michelle Wu as she signed an executive order to increase the opportunity to raise funding for child care through Boston’s zoning code for large development projects.
Care That Works is excited to see our coalition’s research put into action, especially thanks to the Tufts University team that completed a report on the zoning code provision that was just strengthened. This funding is a win for working parents and child care workers in the City. We are inspired and committed to working with the City to explore how these flexible resources can be used to unleash the collective creativity of our communities to build the more equitable systems for caregiving we need.

We are proud of Monique Tú Nguyen’s tremendous contributions as Executive Director of Matahari Women Workers’ Center, to immigrant advocacy and all of our communities, as she prepares to embark on an exciting new adventure as Executive Director of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Advancement.
Over the last 10 years as Executive Director of Matahari, Monique has built up the organization into the powerhouse force for justice and equity that it is today. She has overseen accomplishments like growing Matahari’s membership to over 2,000 dues-paying members, electing their first member leader advisory board, freeing dozens of workers from trafficking and modern-day slavery, and winning back millions of dollars in back wages for domestic and service workers. Her leadership and allyship have been invaluable to Community Labor United, and we are so excited to see what she does next. Thank you, Monique!

Chinese Progressive Association’s 45th Anniversary Celebration
This Saturday, please join us to celebrate the Chinese Progressive Association’s (CPA) 45th anniversary at the Josiah Quincy school. The event will feature performances by members of the community and opportunities to recognize CPA’s collective wins over the last few years. After the program there will be time to chat, connect, and eat together. Masks are strongly recommended while indoors.

Ask your representative to prioritize An Act to improve outdoor and indoor air quality for communities burdened by transportation pollution
Join Clean Water Action in calling on the Legislature to improve outdoor and indoor air quality for communities burdened by transportation pollution. People of color are the most vulnerable to air pollution, and Massachusetts families are at high risk of developing or worsening respiratory illnesses such as asthma. To protect our communities, we need public health legislation, and strict building codes that ensure the air we breathe is free of toxic gas leaks, mold, and other pollutants.
Clean Water Action is working to pass legislation (H.2230: An Act to Improve Outdoor and Indoor Air Quality for Communities Burdened by Transportation Pollution), which seeks to improve air quality by including upgrading building codes to prevent the installation of new gas stoves, expanding outdoor air monitoring for black carbon, requiring installation of air filters in existing eligible buildings, and more!
