Welcome Home to our New Residents

On Friday, July 1, eight people accessing our Adult Emergency Shelter moved into permanent housing at our newest building on Union Street. The Adult Emergency Shelter team had the honor of supporting these eight people in moving into their new homes.

One team member said: "In my 3 ½ years here at the shelter, never have we moved out eight participants simultaneously, so you can imagine my excitement!”

Upon moving in, everyone received a welcome basket with home essentials and a recipe book. Residents were connected with Home Tomorrow to help them furnish their homes, plus received a voucher to shop at Outfitters Thrift Store. These eight individuals will receive ongoing support from our Case Management team to continue working towards their personal goals and maintain permanent housing. We continue to work with our participants as quickly as we can to fill the last three units in August.

Finally Home After Five Years

Jacob had been living in an encampment for five years. He didn’t think he could ever be helped or that he could turn his life around. This past winter, the weather turned so bitterly cold, he finally reached out for help at our Adult Emergency Shelter. When he arrived, he exhaled and said, “It’s just way too cold. I think I’m going to die.”

Jacob worked with our Case Management team to address the issues that led him to experience homelessness and the next steps he would need to take to seek permanent housing. Jacob received a housing voucher from the State, which qualified him for housing at Families in Transition. Jacob is one of the eight people who moved into his new home on July 1. This is the first time he has had a place to call home in over five years.
