PROGRAM UPDATES:
Volviendo A Casa:
(New Program: "Returning Home")
David Ramirez Esteban was a loving husband and father from San Juan Tepulco, Puebla, who tragically drowned trying to cross the San Diego-Tijuana border through Pacific Beach. His sister shared that he struggled to find jobs as he worked construction and after having traveled to various towns to find work to no avail, he decided to migrate to the US. David began his journey and attempted to cross the border in order to gather funds to build a house and offer a better future for his family. David is survived by his wife and two children; A 9-year-old daughter and a 7-year-old son. He was 31 years old.
Through our Volviendo a Casa program, we were able to help transport his body back to Puebla, so that his sister, wife, and children could say their final goodbyes. May he Rest In Peace.
We are devastated at the loss of another life; we continue to denounce the many policies at work at our southern border, which are the cause of this and continue to provide humanitarian aid to those crossing in hopes of preventing such tragedies.

Shelter Aid:
Don Bosco, is a migrant shelter for women and children which currently houses 79 people and the newest member of our Shelter Network in Tijuana. We are excited to assist more migrant families through our Shelter Aid program.
This shelter is an addition to the 17 shelters we already support in Tijuana, feeding and assisting hundreds of migrants daily. These spaces remain at max capacity as MPP and Title 42 eliminate the possibility of asylum for our migrant siblings. Our shelters support Mexican, Central American, Haitian, and Afghan families, as well as members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and more.

Appointment of Eduardo Orendain as Interim Executive Director:
Border Angels is excited to announce the recent appointment of Eduardo Orendain as Interim Executive Director. Mr. Orendain is an accomplished attorney with extensive experience in immigration law and has represented clients from Europe, Latin America, Mexico, Asia and Canada. His appointment follows the departure of the former executive director, Ms. Dulce Garcia. A renowned activist, advocate and champion of migrant rights, Ms. Garcia has been a valuable contributor to our mission.
Our hallmark is our ability to respond to crises at the border with urgency and agility. Given the increasingly dire circumstances of the people we serve, our responsiveness depends on leadership that evolves to meet these ever-changing needs. For the best interest of migrants, refugees and the organization, Mr. Orendain will lead Border Angels into a new era of humanitarian work along the entire US-Mexico border.
With this promising change of leadership, we look forward to continuing the expansion of our work with communities on both sides of the border and to continuing to build a culture of advocacy, education and social consciousness.
Title 42 Exemptions and our first Muslim families
Since April, we have presented at the border over 1400 people under Title 42 exemptions. These exemptions are exclusive to asylum seekers who have been in our supported shelters. This past week, we helped present residents of our supported Assabil shelter, the first muslim refugees who have crossed under these exemptions. We are grateful to be able to provide a small relief to the many immigrants and families who have been waiting, in some cases up to 2 years for a chance at presenting their asylum case.
The existence of this process does not imply that the right to request is being respected. We continue to denounce the systematic violation of the right to request asylum because every day hundreds of people are returned to places of risk without their right to save their lives.
Although these exemptions have given us and those we are assisting great hope, it’s also a painful reminder that government agencies are placing this process on small community organizers with much less capacity, money, and people power than them. While the responsibility for identifying, processing, transporting, and presenting asylum seekers at the border continues to fall on community organizers, we need your help to continue this work, donate through the link in bio to help asylum seekers present their case.

BA IN THE NEWS
Supreme Court Sides With Biden on Ending 'Remain in Mexico' Asylum Policy
President Joe Biden suspended the program on his first day in office in January 2021. But lower courts ordered it reinstated in response to a lawsuit from Republican-led Texas and Missouri. The current administration has sent far fewer people back to Mexico than did the Trump administration.
The heart of the legal fight was whether immigration authorities, with far less detention capacity than needed, had to send people to Mexico or whether they had the discretion under federal law to release asylum-seekers into the United States while they awaited their hearings.
The Supreme Court ruling comes days after at least 53 migrants — including women and children — died of intense heat inside a trailer truck while being smuggled into Texas, as desperation mounts among asylum-seekers to cross.
The Border Angels organization supports 17 migrant shelters in Tijuana and provides legal aid to residents.
