When Trump took office, CPD and the Corporate Backers of Hate Campaign fought against immigrant detention by holding the banks that profit from the administration’s hateful agenda through private detention centers accountable for their investments.
Since the launch of this campaign in 2017, with continued pressure and an ongoing collaboration with the Families Belong Together Campaign, eight banks (Wells Fargo Bank, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, SunTrust, BNP Paribas, Fifth Third Bank, Barclays, and PNC) have stopped financing private detention centers. This represents an estimated $2.35 billion, or 87.4% of the known financing available to the biggest private prison companies, CoreCivic and GEO Group, making it more difficult for these companies to have the financing they need to run private detention centers that cage our communities.
Through our shared struggle and collective action, we have won real change, even with a demagogue in the White House. We must continue winning victories that have real impact on people’s lives, on the respect they receive, on their health, education, and futures. That’s what you help our network of partners and allies to achieve, and why we need your continued generosity.
