John,
CREW experts have been all over the news lately. We take our work to protect democracy seriously, and we’re making sure the American public knows what’s at stake just as well as we do.
CREW has had a key voice in much of the reporting surrounding the January 6th hearings, Trump’s legal battles and other instances of corruption and abuses of power across the political system.
During extensive coverage of the Secret Service’s deletion of texts from January 5 and 6, 2021, our complaint to the Department of Justice was repeatedly cited, highlighting the need for an investigation. CREW Senior Vice President and Chief Counsel Donald Sherman appeared on CBS Evening News to discuss the missing texts, explaining the likelihood of this being an illegal destruction of government records key to an ongoing investigation. Now, a criminal investigation by the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General is underway.
In the aftermath of the first phase of the January 6th hearings, The Hill interviewed CREW’s President Noah Bookbinder on the possible legal threat facing Donald Trump amid an investigation of his attempt to overturn his 2020 defeat in Georgia. Trump's campaign finance practices also continue to raise questions—in Forbes, CREW Research Director Robert Maguire discussed the fate of Trump's $101 million leadership PAC if he announces a run for the presidency.
However, the biggest current campaign finance scandal may be Madison Cawthorn’s illegally spent campaign funds, as reported by the Daily Beast, where CREW Communications Director Jordan Libowitz discusses the clear-cut violation of spending general election donations before the primary, which could trigger a huge fine for Cawthorn.
From the January 6th hearings to Trump’s possible legal battles to campaign finance to Congressional stock trading, CREW experts are behind many of the stories you see in the news. We’re so proud of our groundbreaking legal and investigative work, but to maintain our level of coverage and visibility, we need your support. A generous donor is matching up to $75,000 in donations through the end of July—if you’re able, please consider making a contribution while it goes twice as far in supporting CREW.
To keep up this work, to keep the American public informed on the looming threats to democracy and transparency in government, we’re asking you to help us make the most of this opportunity for your support to go twice as far.
Please consider making a matched donation before Sunday to help CREW keep Americans in the loop on the looming threats to our democracy, and what they mean for the future of this country.
Thank you,
The CREW Team
