Indigenous Earth Defenders across the Amazon face human rights violations every day as stewards and protectors of the forest.
Right now, our allies are in Madrid participating at COP25 to speak out against the repression they face as a result of oil drilling, mining, and deforestation across the Amazon. Attacks on the Amazon are not only attacks on the livelihoods and culture of indigenous peoples, but on our global climate as well.
This is why we stood with our allies to disrupt COP25. Our partners organized and participated in the Minga Indígena – an alternative gathering – because indigenous communities are not represented at official COP25 proceedings. As part of the Sacred Headwaters Initiative, we also released a new report exposing the extreme peril that oil drilling would bring to the most biodiverse ecosystem on the planet.
100% of all donations raised through the end of 2019 will go directly to our programs!
Making our voices heard at one conference will not bring the change we need, which is why it's critical that we provide ongoing support for the struggles of indigenous peoples. When you become an Amazon Watch monthly sustainer, you're investing in the long-term support our allies need to defend the rainforest.
Indigenous peoples can't defend their rights and protect the Amazon alone. We all have a responsibility to stand up for human rights and the Amazon. International Human Rights Day is the perfect day to make that commitment.
Thank you!
