Gaining the confidence to speak up
Hi Friend,
Georgette was a refugee from Burundi who arrived in Vermont to her first glimpse of snow. The transition was not easy. "Everything was new. It was cold. I didn't have any friends. I knew I needed to help support my family."
Georgette was scared by the new experiences, but stronger than her fears was her desire to go to college. From the age of six, she had attended school in a refugee camp in Malawi, learning five languages and encouraging other refugees to persist with their studies. With her deep love of learning, Georgette was worried that her dream of studying sociology in college would now be forgotten.
Fortunately, Georgette enrolled in USCRI Vermont's Pathways to Higher Education Program ([link removed]) . There, with classmates originally from Bhutan, Burma, the Congo, and Iraq, she practiced English and learned about attending college in the U.S. While working full-time, Georgette stayed committed to her dream.
When she first arrived, Georgette was scared to speak English, but after working with USCRI, she says,
"I don't have fear anymore. When I want to talk, I talk.
I have gained confidence and am ready to apply for college."
Georgette plans to enroll in her first college sociology class next fall. We are thrilled for her!
