Nairobi Convention on Biodiversity Meeting Succeeds in Establishing a New Target on Gender and Inclusive Biodiversity
The negotiations to develop the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) in preparation for the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP15) continued within the framework of the 4th session of the Open-Ended Working Group to resolve unfinished issues of the Open-Ended Working Group-3. Indigenous Delegates Face Obstacles to Participation at UNFCCC Bonn Climate Change Conference
After a three-year pause due to the Covid-19 pandemic, on June 6-16, 2022, the 56-session of Subsidiary Body of Implementation (SBI) and Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) were held at the World Convention Center in Bonn, Germany. These are two permanent subsidiary bodies to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) established by the Conference of Parties (COP). Read more.

UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Resumes In-person Session
After a two-year hiatus from physical meetings, the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) held its 15th session from July 4-8, 2022 in a hybrid format. Participation of Indigenous delegates ranged from in-person to virtual from remote places as countries variously adjusted and eased COVID-19 travel restrictions. Read more.

Report to UN Human Rights Council Highlights Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Violations in Japan
Cultural Survival, along with our colleague organizations Association of Comprehensive Studies for Independence of the Lew Chewan Peoples, All Okinawa Council for Human Rights, and Nirai Kanai nu Kai (Indigenous Peoples’ Organization for the Repatriation and Aerial Reburial of Ryukyuan Human Remains into original Ryukyuan Graves), recently submitted a report to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on the violation of Indigenous Peoples’ rights in Japan. Report to UN Human Rights Council Highlights Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Violations in Guatemala
In July 2022, Cultural Survival and the Association Sobreviencia Cultural submitted a report for the 42nd Session of the Universal Periodic Review of the United Nations Human Rights Council. The report, entitled "Observations on the State of Indigenous Rights in Guatemala" evaluates the progress of the State of Guatemala in its international commitments to uphold the rights of Indigenous Peoples, in addition to providing recommendations to the State. Cultural Survival Calls on Mexico to Respect the Rights of Mixtec Peoples in Abasolo del Valle, Veracruz
Cultural Survival joins members of the Abasolo del Valle Indigenous community in denouncing violations of their rights related to work carried out by Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) on their territories. The Mexican state-owned oil company began operating in 2011 in Abasolo del Valle, southern Veracruz, Mexico but has not paid the owners of the land or fulfilled the promised compensation. Read more. Shania Sontariakon/Sandoval-Cross, 26, is Kanien'kehá:ka (Mohawk) from Kahnawà:ke, Canada, and Afro-Maya from Axaja, Guatemala. They were born and raised in unceded xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and Sel̓íl̓witulh territory by strong Mohawk matriarchs and political refugees with predominantly Latin American and diasporic Asian communities shaping their relation to food, community, and cultural norms.
