It took
three years, but Alexandria’s amendment to study MDMA and psychedelic
substances for therapeutic applications finally passed the House.

Why is this important? There’s a lot of evidence that these drugs can help
veterans address PTSD, and they are far less addictive than many
prescription opioids. Yet, the stigma around these drugs have stopped
scientific study. Now, with this amendment, that will change.

Texas Representative Dan Crenshaw filed a connected amendment creating a
grant program to conduct research and clinical trials to treat PTSD using
psychedelics. Together, Alexandria’s and Rep. Crenshaw’s amendments are
huge steps forward in removing the harsh stigmatization and restrictions
imposed on psychedelics during the war on drugs that have blocked further
research on their therapeutic applications.
