Uncorrected vision problems can impair child development, lead to behavior problems in the classroom, interfere with early literacy and learning, and lead to permanent vision loss. A comprehensive vision health program is a school nurse intervention that makes a significant measurable difference in a student’s overall health and learning. BETTER LEARNING. ™ NASN News and Highlights Op-Ed Calls to Sustainably Integrate Health and Learning In an op-ed written by Daniel A. Domenech, executive director of the American Association of School Administrators, he called for policymakers to sustainably integrate health and learning. NASN is a proud partner of The National Healthy Schools Collaborative with AASA and other organizations. "At the federal level, the creation of an office within the U.S. Department of Education charged with overseeing all policy and funding related to healthy schools would bring desperately needed structure and accountability. This recommendation is one of more than 100 included in the Healthy Schools Ten-Year Roadmap, a collection of comprehensive and complementary priorities and associated policy, programmatic, and human-capital related opportunities intended to dramatically increase the number of healthy schools." NASN School Nurse Article: Improving COVID-19 Data Collection Process In one school district, the high school nurse and instructional technology specialist collaborated on improving the process of collecting COVID-19 information, dramatically reducing the time it took to process information and improving data collection and sharing. The literature demonstrates that children with T1D experience multiple challenges in school that may increase their risk for diabetes-related complications. It is critical that a safe and supportive school environment exists for students with T1D. NASN’s School Nursing Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline: Students with T1D provides evidence-based recommendations to assist the school nurse in improving the health and safety of the school-age child with T1D. The School Nursing Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline: Students with T1D Toolkit also offers tools and resources to aid in implementing those recommendations. COVID-19 Updates, Resources and Events Ensuring an Equitable Pandemic Response and Recovery The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Office of Minority Health and Health Equity invite you to attend the Protecting Our Children and Youth from COVID-19: Information for Parents, Caregivers, and Community Partners Webinar tomorrow, July 29, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. ET. This webinar hosted by an interagency workgroup is working under Section 3 of Executive Order 13995: Ensuring an Equitable Pandemic Response and Recovery. Improving Indoor Air Quality in Schools CDC’s Interactive School Ventilation Tool is available for schools to estimate how they can reduce virus particles, including COVID-19, year-round. The tool shows how simple methods, including running HEPA air purifiers, increasing the use of outdoor air in HVAC systems when possible, and running exhaust fans, can reduce virus particles. Improving indoor air quality in schools also helps protect teachers, staff, and students from other respiratory illnesses. This tool is a collaboration between CDC and the National Institute for Standards and Technology. Learn more and register. Promote Well-Being Among Children and Adolescents The Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF) recently released its 2021 Annual Report to Congress. The report spotlights children’s mental health and highlights CPSTF recommendations for school-based cognitive behavioral therapy programs that can help improve children’s access to mental health services. CPSTF recommends universal and targeted school-based cognitive behavioral therapy programs as effective ways to prevent or reduce anxiety and depression symptoms among children and adolescents. Decision makers can use the CPSTF recommendations to inform their efforts to prevent or reduce anxiety and depression and promote well-being among children and adolescents. Innovation in School Nursing Do you have an innovative idea that's going to bring positive change to school nursing this year? Maybe you've spotted an opportunity to invent something to aid students in managing their chronic conditions, or maybe you want to co-create a personalized diabetes or asthma kit with a student. This program supports creative school nurses ready to lead the creation of new tools and more devices to boost students' confidence and increase health equity in their communities. Keeping Kids Fed The U.S. Department of Agriculture will provide nearly $1 billion in additional funding to schools to support the purchase of American-grown foods for their meal programs. President Biden recently signed the Keep Kids Fed Act, which equips schools, summer meal sites, and childcare food programs with extra resources to continue serving children through the 2022–2023 school year. Both actions are in response to the significant challenges child nutrition programs continue to face, such as high food costs and supply chain disruptions. Promote Physical Activity by Walking To/From School CDC Healthy Schools researchers recently published “Improving active travel to school and its surveillance: an overlooked opportunity in health promotion and chronic disease prevention” in Translational Behavioral Medicine. The commentary offers insights into strengthening surveillance and data collection of active travel to school (ATS) behavior and ATS environmental, policy, and program supports.
