     Dear friends,

This week, I share information about a school supplies drive being organized by Richmond Executive-Chesterfield County Airport, talk about the “Thank a CCPS Teacher” initiative, highlight employment opportunities within the school districts of SD-10, celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT), and discuss community events from this past week. Thank you for taking the time to read our newsletter and for staying informed.

Thank a CCPS Teacher
Our educators work tirelessly to support our students. With the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers have been especially called upon to adapt, innovate, and create environments that continue to support quality education for children across the Commonwealth.

Chesterfield County Public Schools is asking its students to make short personal videos to thank a special teacher. Sometimes, the smallest gestures can make a huge impact, and we know our teachers deserve these tributes of appreciation. Videos can be submitted here by Sunday, July 31.

Employment Opportunities with CCPS, RPS, and PCPS
As Fall approaches, Chesterfield County Public Schools, Richmond Public Schools, and Powhatan County Public Schools are all seeking to fill a variety of staff and faculty positions:

  • Chesterfield County Public Schools, one of the biggest school districts in the nation, has a variety of employment opportunities.
  • Richmond Public Schools has many job openings, including both part-time and full-time: job postings. RPS is offering $6,000 moving stipends for teachers currently living 50+ miles outside of Richmond, $4,000 signing bonuses for teachers with 2+ years experience, and $2,000 signing bonuses for new teachers.
  • Powhatan County Public Schools positions are available on the jobs portal

Celebrating 30 Years of DRPT
July 2022 marks 30 years since the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) was established by the General Assembly. Public transportation is crucial for economic development, equity, and an improved quality of life for all Virginians. To celebrate this milestone, the DRPT has redesigned their website to emphasize the resources that it provides to localities and highlight the partnerships that have fostered throughout the years. Also, the DRPT has introduced a new open data portal, providing access to publicly available data and financial information on public transportation and rail in Virginia.

Community Events This Week

Last week, my legislative assistant, Charles, and his family traveled to Wise County to volunteer for the Mission of Mercy free dental clinic. Dentists and dental students from around the state provided free cleanings and fillings to the people of southwest Virginia. Charles also had the opportunity to visit the surrounding towns of Norton, Big Stone Gap, and Appalachia and talk to some of their residents about life in southwest Virginia.

I had the honor of speaking at the Deccan Alumni Association of North America (DAANA) reunion in Orlando. Many of these physicians have been on the frontline of the pandemic and have extended charitable medical services around the world. I was joined by Senator Mujtaba Mohammed from North Carolina. That evening, I spoke about the crucial role state governments play in addressing public health needs, in protecting voting rights and the rights to privacy, and in providing quality public education.

On Tuesday, my Chief of Staff, June, attended a House Affordability Listening Session with the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). Stakeholders from across the Metro Richmond Area (state agencies, nonprofit organizations, community advocates, developers, and legislative staff) discussed ways to increase the affordability and supply of housing.

On Wednesday, I had the honor of touring the VCU Massey Cancer Center and speaking with Dr. Robert Winn, Director and Lipman Chair of Oncology. I also met with Dr. Said Sebti, Associate Director for Basic Research, and several other staff members. The ongoing work of the Massey Cancer Center, both in its research laboratories as well as in its clinical practices, is inspiring. Richmond and Virginia are fortunate to have such a stellar and nationally-recognized cancer care center to serve the needs of Virginians and others.
